Datejust, always safe to invest in?

I’ve currently got two different style Datejusts, and was recently talking to a collector. He was saying with the market going the way it is, investing in datejusts is a safe bet. It’s a classic Rolex model, affordable, and will always be a good investment, a safe investment ….

But I’m looking to maybe get a different style for my 3rd Rolex. Not sure what other model would fall under those same categories. Was thinking maybe an Explorer 1, or maybe spend a few extra and go with a sub.

Datejusts are not rare and most trade below retail depending on the configuration. Why would you think they are a “good investment”?

Unique datejusts can be great investments. Which datejusts are you talking about though? by SKU, there's literally over 2500 size, bracelet, bezel, dial combinations through the history of Rolex. SKUs easily be in the tens of thousands.

If you're talking about a run-of-the-mill 36mm datejust, it is a good investment like buying and wearing more professional clothes for an interview to help make you feel more confident. Investing in how you feel so that hopefully you perform better.

Or, you own a pawn shop and people are selling their dead dad's to you for $1500-3000 so that you can service them, lightly polish and flip on 47th street for $4500.

If you're talking about actual investment grade ones, here are two examples. Here are 2 datejusts that recently did extremely well in the November 2024 Phillips Auction:

My conclusion for you is, yes go buy it if you feel like it.

P.S. You’re buying your third Rolex for the wrong reasons if investment is your criterion.

The majority of us are here because we love mechanical watches and we love the Rolex brand. We buy watches we want to see on our wrists. We don’t think about them as investments. I certainly don’t.

Goodness gracious, no. With the market going the way it is, we are headed into a challenging time, even for Rolex. Prices of each model are down across the board, with some exceptions, and first and foremost on the drop are the easier to acquire, such as datejusts.

Rolex are not a safe bet, and I would never trust a friend telling you that. This might be hard for your friend to admit, but nobody knows the future. So no, it's not a safe bet.

You know what is a safe bet though? Buying a watch because you love it. If you want a new Rolex, buy the one that speaks to you OP!

Personally, I LOVE vintage 5 digit 36mm DJs but cannot stand the current ones. So I buy what I like, including other really interesting brands to round out my collection.

In the long term they will be worth more than you paid for them. But, there are better investments.

A Datejust can be a store of value (at best) not an investment to make a significant profit.

I have one because it’s one of my favorite watches. I don’t buy any watches for investment purposes. But any Rolex is a safe buy since they generally don’t depreciate in value. Many actually appreciate in value. And a Submariner is much better than a DJ from that perspective.

No watches are investments, including Rolex.
The value from new will drop immediately by 20%, and then over 20 years go to around 25% of original purchase value.
Thats taking into account inflation and being kind.

You buy a watch to enjoy it and/or as a status symbol (lets be honest), but not as an investment

You can invest in vintage watches, but to do this you need to buy them excessively cheap (e.g. from estates, bankruptcies, badly attended auctions, etc.) and you REALLY need to know your subject. For example why a 1973 seamaster with tritium tubes (which are difficult to spot on the dial unless you know what you are looking for) are worth 50% less then ones without. And its a fashion thing, the value can flip in a year.

Rolex watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed but many today think they are just £££$$$€€ object things and little more.
