Saw this beauty while filling up Sunday Morning:







I must say seeing that put an ear-to-ear grin on my face and was a wonderful way to start the day. When he left the station I could hear rubber for the first three gears!

The original 1969-1970 Superbirds and Daytonas with that crazy wing weren't very popular back then. I believe that Chrysler had to manufacture and sell a certain number of vehicles to the public in order for it to be eligible to race in nascar. Of course, buyer disdain at that time makes it rare and expensive today!

Well yes my friend, they are worth a ton, but not because they are beautiful, because they are rare and and have the racing pedigree every collector car enthusiast wants. All things being equal, and pretending they both have the same race HEMI and that they were worth the exact same amount of money, which one would you want to drive. As rare as the Daytona/Superbird's were I'd take the Charger with no nose cone and no wing every single time!

Great pictures! I remember the original ones, and there were at least 2 in my personal sphere, when I was 10 years old (1970), or so. One had the "clip-on" front and one did not. IIRC, one was green and one was orange.

I'm rather surprised that most people so far do not like it, but I have to remember that I'm in a Ferrari crowd <smile>. I think the back wing would be the perfect place for a GoPro camera!

Only for show now (the trunk has to clear the wing) but with the elongated nose, it had a drag coefficient of .26. I might add that it is supposedly the first car to be put through wind-tunnel testing for NASCAR, hence the recorded .26 cd.

I also remember when the Mercedes 190-E (?) came out and it had the best cd at .28 or .38, I don't exactly remember the numbers now...

Oh, if I recall correctly, that is a tribute to Richard Petty. I believe its his voice too. He drove one...

Yes, the Petty's were a key part of bringing the cars to NASCAR and therefore into street production. They had to make over 1200 IIRC to make it a "stock" street car that could be raced. They won several races until the aero was neutered a year or two later by limiting engines to 305 cu. in. or you'd have a higher min. weight to carry.

But the Superbird's styling proved to be a little extreme even for the '70s. Many customers preferred the regular Road Runner so these sat on the back lots of dealerships. Some were converted back into Road Runners in order to sell them.
