Should I trade my SD4000 for a 112?
I've recently been bitten by the Panerai bug. The simplicity of the dials and the iconic design combined with really cool custom straps has sold it for me.
Now I'm torn. In order to fund a PAM112 (or 111) I would probably need to liquidate my M series Sea Dweller 4000. This being a forum visited by lovers of both brands I ask - should I do it? If it was a 312 I wouldn't hesitate but I'm hesitant about trading an SD for an Unitas based PAM. What do you think?

That's a pretty touch decision. I would go Rolex for an everyday wearing watch, but Panerai is AWESOME!

Do what your heart says. Sounds cheesy, but that's the truth. If the PAM excites you - do it. If the SD excites you, keep it and save up for the 112. There will be plenty of 112s down the road.

I would not do it...the SD is every bit as iconic as the 112...save for it..or pick one up on the 2ndary market...
its not a one to one trade... and this coming from a guy with a 312...

I would do it !! Simple..... place a 112/111 next to a SD and you tell me !!
![]() ![]() For me its not even a contest.I had a SD and I do have a PAM 111.Perhaps that in itself explains a lot. ![]() |

Panerai makes some sweet watches. But to give up a SD for a 112 with a pocket watch movement...... NO SIR.

dont do it are you crazy
get a rolex and a panerai the 111 or 112 is good enough. its the classic pam but dont let go of your SD.
if you want 2 similar watches in terms of function get a pam submersible. |

I agree with the SD all but gone you may not get the chance to buy another. The PAM will be there.

It's not about function in the Panerai VS Rolex debate. They are two different beasts.
What our man here is having is a conflict of design... The rolex is a timid beast and his personality might be a bit bigger and bolder than the grandfatherish look of the seadweller. Thus i say flip the seadweller and get a panerai if it is what suits your eye.... If you are considering flipping it i would dare say you do not love it and there is no room in anyone's collections for pieces they are not crazy about. |

I love both, but would have to say the SD4000 is much more of a watch, and that is coming for a Panerai nut.
But that being said, it is up to YOU. Do you wear the SD? |

Don't do it for anything less than the 312.

Wouldn't a 312 cost a lot more than the SD would realise?
I'm wearing the SD today and whilst I love the design, it's just too heavy for me and I can never get the bracelet just right. I'm really genuinely torn.

Ouch!
That'll be a yes then. Can't justify the extra $3k for an in-house movement as there's so little information about it. Even the Panerai website doesn't outine why the in-house movement is better. Simply redesigning a very old pocket watch movement by moving the positions of some of the wheels isn't exactly a great leap forward. I may be wrong but due to the lack of official information I'm guessing I'm not.

I have both a PAM 112 and Rolex SD. Save up for the PAM! It's nice to have both.

112
Get the 112... Much more enjoyment on your wrist than a sd... Just sold my submariner To fund more panerais... A 112 Is much more desirable than a rolex sub or sd and will be much easier to sell If your not happy.

Now I'm totally confused. I'm leaning towards the submersible now....
I love the SD but I just can't seem to get on with it. I can always get a sub later on anyway. The only thing stopping me is the old Unitas movement. I'm thinking of selling the SD and then saving up for a 312 or submersible 1000.
