Icon14 Pronzo re-visited

now that the "shock" of another bronze panerai has passed, i thought i'd take another look at the 507.

what i've found is that i have completely warmed up to the PR on the dial. i like the balance it gives the dial and how the PR fills the empty space opposite the seconds dial. i also like the 3 lines on top vs the 2 and 2.

and, going out on a limb, the two sub-dials, when coupled with the bronze case, give the watch an old-time analog feel, like an old submarine.

lastly, for what it's worth, i think the back of the 507 is nicer than the 382.

now, don't get me wrong, if i could choose between a 382 and 507 at list price, it would be a tough choice, but, i find that i can longer just dismiss the pronzo.

how about you?

I'm not usually a fan of P/R on the dial, but I think it suits the 507 and looks balanced

I would also be hard-pressed to pick between the two

I always liked the PR on the dial. I bought a 241 and a 423. I MIGHT buy a 90 if I can find one, and a few spare $$, which isn't likely at the moment.

When someone can explain to me the utility of having a power reserve indicator on ANY self-winding watch, perhaps I may form an opinion.

I don't wear the 241 enough to keep it wound and the PR tells me when I need to. I daresay the vast majority of people enamored of the Daytona and chronos in general have absolutely no need for them.

i don't have one, but, i think for those that do, it's an interesting complication. plus, when the watch is in the watch box, i imagine it's helpful in the sense that one can just give a quick scan to see what might need winding (assuming one wants to keep one's watches running).

While I would prefer a 382 - there's no way I would pay what they are commanding on the open market.

I'm on the list for a 507 and am hoping that it actually comes through.

I'm sure it'll look ridiculous on my 6.75" wrists but I just don't care.

Unless you have an watch-winder or wear the watch exclusively, having the PR indicator is a useful reminder for the owner to take it for a spin before the power runs out.

For example, I have the 321 and I find the PR indicator highly useful because I do not follow a set rotation for wearing my watches. Many times, I have relied on the PR indicator to remind myself to either place the watch in a winder or wear it. This may sound trivial--and perhaps many do not mind--but I find that having to set the time over and over on watches gets annoying after a while.

Setting the utility factor aside, there's also the aesthetic and horological value. Some like the dial having the PR, some like the complication, and some like both.

Cru, you don't have an option for...

"I want a bronzo in a non - 1950 sub case!"

I can't pull off the case.

My dream Panerai would be a bronze Luminor 44mm with a 372 vibe. Base and plexi.

I'm not all that whoopee about bronze as a case material, particularly in a watch that size. it's a big watch that my 7.25" wrist doesn't work for really.

BUT, if it were in a patinaed Titanium case,a darkish grey, well may be.

Given I can only vote the once, i will say though I prefer the 507 over the 382. Less hype for a start.
Thanks Cru for starting a poll. I would never see these watches where I live anyways.

cheers,
richard

hope you get it! for me, it's the thickness that kills it for me, as does the price, since it would be tough for me to wrap so much of watch budget in a weekend piece. so, i'll admire it from afar. love the bronze PAMs.

yeah, that would be sweet, though, i think the ruggedness of the 1950 sub case fits the bronze patina look quite well.

anyway, wait a year or two, and maybe you'll get it (or, at least get to see it and put your name down and then probably not get it).

i hear you. part of me, though, thinks the bronze case + date already takes this watch out of the usual rule for panerais, and, in that way, the PR can work.

have you and mik been talking?

since the case would be bronze and show patina, i don't think the crystal would need to show patina, so, i vote for sapphire over plexi in your dream PAM.

i set the poll up for multiple votes, actually. but, yeah, i think the only way to see these watches is to attend a GTG. i would love to handle one.

Yo Cru,
Seeing as I had voted once, it wouldn't let me go again. That's okay.
I'm okay with the 507, no way ever would I spring for a 382 at their current asking price.

Someone, please, send me a 507, if I don't like it I promise to swap for something else, okay

cheers,
richard

I'm on several lists for the 507 but not holding out much hope, prefer the 382 for the simpler dial but as others have said I'm not willing to pay the daft prices, be nice if the introduction of the 507 brought the 382 down although I imagine getting hold of one would still be an issue

I know I'm in the minority, but bronze is an odd material for a watch IMO.

The only thing I don't understand is "three lines on top"?

But I would wholeheartedly agree with you, that the dial with PR is much nicer! It does give an old "analogue" submarine-ish feel. It's like a steampunk thing, and I would get that PR version in a heartbeat compared to the original version.

However, I still think the case is a bit too large and too heavy for my small wrist to wear, and it doesn't look good on me. It would be more interesting if they release it in a 44mm version with perhaps a manual wound to keep the size down. Its always nice to fill the PR manually.
