I spent a couple of months trying to find a PAM00177.

Several deals where going to happen then fell through for one reason or another. Then the supply of 177s seemed to dry up. Then 2 weeks ago I came across an auction in Japan. Anyway after some discussions I got my first Panerai.

I'm quite happy about the watch and here are a few photos:

Here is a comparison with a 41mm Seamaster GMT

It seems to be about the limits of size for my wrist.

The watch although 44mm is very comfortable it being made of titanium.
The lack of a hacking movement is a little disappointing and I can't seem to put backward pressure on the crown to hold the second hand to otherwise cause the second hand to stop moving. As a result it is not possible (so it seems) to have the exact to the second time set.

I do think it will be much nicer on a good leather strap.

The black hands look great, the display back is really cool and the manual wind is something that already I'm surprised I find quite enjoyable.

I don't understand having a COSC rating but not being able to set the second hand Please tell me if I'm missing something.

Overall, I do think this is a very interesting watch that will wear well on the weekends. It does have quite a tool like ruggedness that I really appreciate.

Looks good. I see it is the new series with the tiny roller in the cam on the crown guard.
I assume this also has the quick change system, with the pins, for strap changes?

Since you have a brown croc, I think a black leather, white stich would be a great second strap.

I'm going for a Militare black stitching strap by Greg Stevens.

The strap only appears to have screws, there is no other visible quick release device for the strap change. Again I'm not sure if this is what I am supposed to be looking at.

Black with white stitch would definitely be cool, but I am trying to offset the darker colour of the titanium case with a lighter coloured tan. I really can't wait until I get the Militare with black stitching.

The watch is a 'j' series and was sold in July 2007, so it still has over 1 year warranty

I have a Panerai Luminor Marina, as well, a 40mm Pam 48, and it has a hacking movement simply by pulling out the crown all the way - why do you think the 40 and 44 mms mechanicals are that different? I'd be interested to know, if anyone has the answer.

Congrat Steve! wear in good health.
Black leather strap will definitely look nice. Or darker chocolate color is pretty nice as well.

the screws in the lugs are holding your strap on and no, unbelievably it has no hacking function. you will have allot of fun collecting straps. it is quite addictive and can get costly!! lol

wear it well!

Looks good Steve. If I jump back into the brand and go 44 mm, it may be the 176 or 177. If I go 40mm, it will definitely be the 48.

Thanks guys,

It is a cool watch and I'm hoping that the Greg Stevens Militare will make it feel much more comfortable than the stiff brown leather OEM Panerai Strap that came with the watch

I'm going to be away for a couple of weeks so the Panerai will go into hibernation and when I get back the Greg Stevens strap should be waiting for me. Then I will be ready to party

Very nice ! Congrats! I'm on my way to a shop to buy straps for my PAM. I also want a Greg Stevens strap. I sent an email to him but have yet to hear back. How did youplace your order?

Nice Pam, Steve. Exactly like my old 111, but more "posh".

The alligator strap you already have softens up beautifully with a bit of wear. It improves with age.

Atta boy Steve, good onya pal!!

One thing you will get used too is not worrying about the time. There are not even seconds markers, so it don't matter.

Get a BASE and that will really cure ya pal.

When I wore Rolex I checked weekly, now that I wear Panerai I don't even check yearly. Life is too short to worry about seconds bro.

Great choice, that is one of the hottest looking Panerai made bro.

Very nice, I like the numbers in 'relief' and the lume should be excellent.

It is screaming for a black strap maybe with white or red stiching to take your eyes away from the SIZE of it.

Well done buddy.

It looks awesome. I really like the 'sandwich' dial, gives it that 3-D effect.

Can't wait to see it in person.

John.
i agree with you, the sandwich dial is very cool. my favorite's are the 177h and the 111h. even though the only difference is titanium and polished ss respectively they look very different to me. i like them both.

Yep. He has some great stuff and I am looking to purchase a bunch of leather items from him. It would be awesome to have a nice wallet, a passport holder and a band made from the same piece of leather :)

Looks great. Feels solid. Reasonably priced and rare. I have been wearing my watch for several weeks and not a single person said "Wow, is this a REAL Panerai." I hope they remain a small scale company that does not exceed 100,000 units per year.

Thanks Daren, I think you are right one can obsess too much (a little obsession is good ) and so I will just enjoy the watch.

I don't know about those in house Panerai straps, it seems they are darn stiff leather. There seems to be so much more to be offered from aftermarket straps, in fact that is a huge part, so it seems, of what makes the watch so much fun, versatile and enjoyable.

I don't say that I am going to be buying straps in any kind of quantity, but it does allow for a lot more personalisation or individual tailoring of the watch to the personal preferences of the owner.

It seems that the straps can really change the character of the watch enormously. At the same time, the Panerai, is essentially a tool watch and its size and presentation really makes a statement.

I'm now starting to understand why Panerai has such a strong community of enthusiasm.

Straps are a really fun part of Panerai ownership. With a Rolex I think there is a strong connection with watch and strap and I wouldn't feel comfortable changing straps on a Rolex.

Greg Stevens got back to me and I ordered my Crazy Horse.
What straps are you waiting for?

Lisa I am going for the militare with black stitching. I'm pretty keen on this with my titanium case Panerai.
