Is This A Mk 5 or Mk 6 Red Sub 1680?

Hey Guys:

There are some questions about this lovely Red Sub for sale over on HQM.

Mk 5 or Mk 6 dial? I thought the answer was black and white, but apparently not...

Thanks for jumping in on the discussion.....

According to thier website its a MK 5 which looks correct to me. What makes you think it's a MK 6?

The "660 FT" has closed sixes....i.e. Mk 6....chart by Mark Lerman on WatchProSite...

Mark V.

The 6's on a Mark V dial are only slightly open, so sometimes it's hard to tell in a pic.

The font of "SUBMARINER" and the darkness of the red are clear indicators of a Mark V dial. The Mark V did not have red on top of white, but rather only red, so it's darker. Had a local watchmaker insinuate that my Mark V dialed red 1680 was fake, since there was no white peeking out underneath the red (as he was told to look for during his class from Rolex). Sigh.

Also, even experienced sellers (like the one you're looking at) occasionally get the dial version wrong. No big deal, but you should always verify the information for yourself.

It can be hard to tell. Especially whe someone posts a blurry pic, and you can't see the 6's very good. One way to be sure is that in the MK V dial the CER in CERTIFIED lines up directly under the HRO in CHRONOMETER. This is in contrast to the Mk IV and VI dials where the CER is shifted to the left under the HRO in CHRONOMETER.

I agree that they can be hard to tell. Here is a photo from Mark Lerman's article that shows all 6 dial variations.

The photo provided in the OP is NOT very blurry....and the angle taken doesn't seem to "merge" the 6's loops....

If the dial from the HQM watch really does have closed 6's (not the partially open 6's), then we may have discovered a new variation, the Mk 5.5 !!

I think if you zoom in on the picture it looks like they are slightly open. The give away for me is the S's are flat not rounded and the F in ft lines up with the V rather than the I in superlative.

in addition to the open and close 6's

mk 5 = f directly over the v
mk 6 = f directly over the i
