Nothing to worry about unless you are a commercial saturation diver.

In simple terms, commercial divers will work in recompression chambers which have an oxygen and helium mix to breath (instead of atmospheric air which is oxygen and nitrogen). Imagine sitting in a giant gas cylinder (one that you can move around in eat sleep walk etc) which is pumped full of air and you’ll get the idea.

Under pressure, helium can penetrate seals (and it has been stated that the crystal as well) of the watch (The molecules of helium are probably smaller than oxygen and nitrogen?).

Unfortunately it doesn’t come out of the watch as quickly as it goes in when the divers recompress back to normal atmospheric pressures, the build up of pressure inside the watch is greater than the pressure that surrounds it and there have been recorded incidents of the crystals being blown off the front of the watches.

Keep in mind that these guys can be working in that environment for weeks at a time, eating sleeping working etc so they are in a constant compressed atmosphere.

The helium escape valve will allow the pressure which has built up inside of the case to vent off when it reaches a critical point instead of blowing the crystal off.

The design was invented by I think Doxa and Rolex and Rolex patented it decades ago.

Basically it’s a one way gas escape valve for the above. It has nothing to do with being wet; it’s for the dry environment.

Hope that helps
