Advice on a trade please.

Hi Guys,

I would really like to hear your thoughts on this.

I have been given the opportunity to acquire (via a trade of two watches) a brand new Rolex DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller D-Blue Dial "James Cameron" Edition.
The watch is brand new purchased 6 weeks ago from a local AD, never worn or sized or even had the stickers removed.

The 2 watches I would trade are:

1 - 1993 Rolex Zenith Daytona Gold and Steel. Mint condition, box and papers purchased by me brand with very little wear. Totally complete as the day I bought it.
A very similar watch can be viewed here - http://www.chrono24.com.au/rolex/day...-id3455128.htm

2 - 2002 Tag Heuer Quartz Link Series Two-Tone 18K Solid Gold and Steel. Mint condition, box and papers purchased by me brand with very little wear. Totally complete as the day I bought it.
A very similar watch can be viewed here - http://www.chrono24.com.au/tagheuer/...-id4089498.htm

The dealer wants my two watches plus $3,500 Australian Dollars (approx US$2,500.00).

I am curious to know your thoughts on the long term collectability of the Deepsea. I would not wear it as it is just too big for me (I don't wear the two I would trade either) but as a collectable over the next 10-20 years, I think it could be a good thing.

I would like to give him an answer within 48 hrs so I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on whether this is a good deal or not.

Many thanks,

Bob.

NO NO NO not a good trade since u will overpay big time like this. U can better sell it privately and then buy the Deepsea.
In term of long time investment I would look for the Kermit with a flat 4 or Pepsi Stick or Rectangular dial with 3186 calibre (M serial or very late Z serial).

Good god man get a hold off yourself!
Noooooooo way in a million years, for sure flip the Tag and save for the DSSD.
I am very fond of the TT Daytona, so that would be a keeper for me.

If you're not going to wear the Deepsea I see no point in acquiring it.

Definitely this.

TT Daytona is a keeper for me. But you should sell your Tag and add some $$ then buy DSSD D BLUE

I'm not a fan of daytonas and I love the D-blue but even I wouldn't do that trade. Especially as you're unlikely the wear the Deepsea.

I'd keep the TT daytona as I think that would hold it's value much better long term.

Please don't trade your keeper! On a side note if your comfortable with the size of a 40mm Daytona the Deepsea may overwhelm your wrist as it is very chunky.

the DSSD, like all modern rolex, are mass-produced and not at all rare... there will be no "jackpots" in the future, so, if you don't wear a watch, why own it?

I wouldn't do the trade - maybe the Tag and some more cash, but not Tag, Daytina, and cash - that's one cheeky dealer!

Exactly.

Oh and I might add, this is a fantastic deal . . . . . . for the dealer

Not in a million years. You are losing out. The best way to do this is to sell privately and then get the DBlue.

I love the TT Zenith Daytona. So my vote is a no.

I agree with everyone so far, seems like the only one getting a good deal is the DSSD owner.......too much with money thrown in as well.

Don't do it if you are not going to wear it. Cash contribution to high - not a good deal.

Let's do the math...

A DeepBlue SD goes for $11.5K complete.

The Two Tone Daytona has a HARD CASH BUY of $8,000

The Tag link is $1000 on the TOP END....lucky to get that. You would have to add $10.5k to get the DeepSEA...lol.

So the $2500 cash outlay plus the (2) watches is an acceptable deal. The numbers are there.

But if you aren't going to wear it, it's not worth the effort.

First of all...buy something you will wear!
Second, I don't see the deep sea blue as a collectible

Yes...the deal offered is absolutely fair almost to the penny...considering the convenience of the trade and accepting a Tag as part of it. No offense to the Tag Link, but they just aren't easy to sell pre-owned...

What a low valuation for the Daytona, I would have thought that it would fetch at least 10k.

No! No! No!
Now that I have that out of my system, if you do the deal and then stick the Deep Blue in the safe, I guarantee you'll missing the Daytona by the time the sun goes down.

Dealer has to trade in the watch at that value so he can sell it for a profit.

$8k is the mark. $10K is competitive retail. It will need some servicing, put a warranty on it and it will sit for a while before somebody wants it...

Two tone Daytona's are very soft sellers. Nothing wrong with them, just they are historically lightweights in terms of resale.

To be honest, I'm surprised the dealer would accept those watches in trade towards a very hot seller and popular watch....

It's a pity the OP doesn't really like the DS. If it were me, I'd do the deal.

You rarely win in a trade deal unless you bought unbelievably cheap in the first place. Most times you're better off selling yourself.

Once again, I thank everyone for their feedback.

In addition to the two watches mentioned as trades I also have:

1 - 1986 16753 GMT Master Gold/Steel box and papers.

2 - 1994 16613 Submariner Blue dial box and papers.

3 - 2001 Omega Moonwatch - Box and Papers.

4 - 2014 216570 Explorer II White dial box and papers.

5 - 2016 116713 GMT Master II Gold/Steel box and papers.

So.......I generally rotate between the Explorer II and Submariner.
I am pleased that Fleetlord thought the deal was worth doing as I was scratching my head, thinking I have gone mad contemplating the deal.

The two questions I have are........... Will the Daytona in Gold and steel ever change and become a real collectors piece or will it always remain a poor distant cousin to the stainless steel version.
And lastly, the long term collectability of the Deepsea?
As stated, looking at current values and the convenience of the trade etc etc I thought the response would be more balanced. That said, if I ask for advise and it's overwhelming in one direction, I'd be fool not to take notice.
Cheers......

Bob.
