Suit recommendations - not high end

If you are high end and only say buy $1000+ suit you can stop reading now!

I don't wear suits unless I have to:
Funeral
Wedding
Job interview

Until now, I've only bought from Jos Bank.

They aren't great but not horrible. I see men's warehouse is similar. Many places on the net say go to Macy's or Nordstrom. So I'm on the sites but prices and brands are all over the place.

What is the best suit I can get for the $300-$500 range? What brands to avoid, or brands to go for. Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Well, hopefully you're not trying to buy a suit that you can wear for a funeral, wedding and job interview, lol!

Do you actually need a suit? Can you get away with a nice sport coat and trousers?

Looks like Suit Supply is nearby. Others are not. I understand I can order online but I don't know much about suits obviously! Thanks

Well, just went to wedding and I don't see any on the horizon.

Funerals....well you never know.

Job interview. The real reason. I work in IT and do interviews with some frequency. People show up in suits and it is always funny b/c they are the only one! Often people wear an old suit b/c almost no one in IT wears suits. It would be better if they wore a nicer business casual. When I will be going on jobs to interview for, they will be more managerial / leadership positions. A nice set of trousers and sport jacket would likely be appropriate, but I'll be brutally honest, I'm not very fashionable and hate shopping for clothes. Leads me to a suit. They measure me up, give me a few to try on and I'm more or less done.

Do I want a suit - no. Do I feel like you need one just in case - yes.

It's all name brand game. Other than the ultra high end market.

For $500 or less? I think Suit Supply is your best bet. I have two sportcoats from them and am happy with both

For $300 to $500, I would have to agree that SuitSupply or Brooks Brothers are probably the best quality options. Ralph Lauren Polo, typically manufactuered by Corneliani, is pretty decent quality as well and can be had frequently in that price range. If you are in Europe, Boggi is a good choice too.

If you are a pretty standard size, I would also recommend eBay; you can find much better quality suits than those mentioned above--brand new--often for around $500. Examples would include Canali, Corneliani, Ralph Lauren Black Label (made by Caruso I believe).

Suitsupply works really well for me. I also have a local tailor who does excellent work that I've brought them all to for tailoring.

More importantly, you'll need a proper pair of shoes; do you have that covered already?

I've bought multiple suits and dress shirts from Indochino and am very happy with the fit and quality. I think the 379 or 399 for a suit is as good a deal as you can get especially bc you don't have to worry about tailoring costs which could be $50-80 off the rack.

There was a GQ article about this. The tip GQ said it's not all about the suit. It's about the tailering. A 2k suit not tailored would look worse than a $300 suit tailored. Buy be nixes suit material you can afford go to a nice tailor get the whole thing tailored not sure the lengths but fit. Even the shirt can be tailored. If that costs you $120 to get the whole thing tailored it would be worth it as the suit will now look like a 1k suit.

This is probably more important than the brand of suit you buy, to be honest.

Edit: Lordofrolex beat me to it.

I wouldn't worry about brand at all. Find a suit that fits well. Fit is king, brand is pointless unless you already know what brand fits you. Keep in mind that some brands won't fit you at all, the cut just won't be right.

Charcoal goes to any occasion. Go to Suit Supply and find one that looks good on you.

If you've got some decent clearance outlet malls near you, check out if they have a Hugo Boss, Off 5th or Neiman Marcus Last Call outlets there. You will find name brand designers marked down to around your price range (and if you catch them at the right time, well within your price range). Off 5th and NMLC also have frequent sales online where clearance items are marked down up to 80% off. Sign up to receive their email announcements.

After you get a suit, find a good tailor.

For that type of wear, stick with men's warehouse or Nordstrom Rack

No, need some new shoes as well. I'll be looking for those next. Need a decent white shirt also , shouldn't be hard to find that.

Go to an Allen Edmonds store and find a style you like and get fitted. Come home and order from the Shoe Bank.

Nordstrom SmartCare shirt.

Get a comfortable oxford cap toe in black, with a rubber sole. A black oxford cap toe is the traditional business shoe. They go with everything from a tux to a sport coat, and are appropriate in any business setting, funeral, wedding, or red carpet.

Whole grain leather is best, as it shines up really well, doesn't get ugly creases, and lasts a long time. Don't sweat goodyear welt or recraftable, you probably won't wear them enough in your field to wear them out anyway.

EDIT: An example of the style.

I had a pair of AE before and they were the only shoe that was uncomfortable in my life. I came back months later to get another pair and the guy recognized me and said didn't I sell you some shoes recently. Told him about him and he said bring the back. I was surprised but I did. I felt lucky.

AE is a good company.

Dress shoes aren't like trainers, you have to get a model (last) that fits your feet. They may be the right size, but wrong shape. You can try AE again, just make sure you try on a few different lasts to see if you're comfortable in them.
