Am I alone??? Or crazy???

After collecting (and selling) many watches over the past few years, i had an epiphany last week. I have had the pleasure of getting my hands on some really great watches from my AD. 5711/1A, 5711R, 5990, 5164, 116500LN and a handful of other rolexes.

I've been wanting a PP "dress watch" for some time now. I was offered a 5270P, the watch that I have coveted for a while, but I could not stomach the price. I came across a 5905P (a watch that I've really liked) at a reputable grey dealer. We struck a nice deal on the 5905 and thought why not trade one of my "hot" watches. I have loved the 5711R from day 1, but found myself rarely wearing it. I decided to trade the 5711R towards the 5905 and get some cash back.

If you look at the "profit margin" in the 5711R and put that towards the 5905, it's like buying the 5905 under $30k. I personally feel like the 5711R is totally overvalued and the 5905P undervalued at the price I paid.

Does this make me a "flipper" or crazy? Has anyone else out there done anything similar over the past couple years?

When the price of my 5711R more than tripled to over £100K I did ask WF for a quote, which was actually quite fair, but I didn't pull the trigger as the watch is perfect for me at the moment. I would be tempted to trade it or something for the 5270 maybe one day, when I'm not quite so young and sporty.

Congrats! If you’re not wearing something it makes sense to let it go for something you’ll enjoy. Nice one!

I did just that for my 5270 with my 5980. Never looked back! Haha. So happy about it.

When I need to satisfy my sports watch fix, I’ll just put on a Rolex or Grand Seiko... Haha

No it's not crazy at all.

I'm going to admit it here for the first time - I sold my much beloved 5712/1A since I was starting to wear it less out of fear of it being recognized by the wrong people and scratching the bezel, and bought a Lange 1815 Chronograph in WG to take its place. I basically got the Lange for free.

Sounds like a good move to me. That Lange chrono is sweet! And free is the best price!

Just Did similar move, opportunity knocks and we opened the door.

Perhaps A flipper turns for pure profit but a wis makes a deal to pursue another watch. This is a rare and enjoyable circumstance.

How often do you wear your Lange? I have the same but don’t wear as much - afraid to get scratches.

4-5 days a week. It's all swirled up but I don't sweat it knowing that Lange laser welds cases when you request a polish.

True. Any idea on the cost of polishing? Also, do you have it deployant buckle?

Sounds reasonable to me. Specially the ss 5711 is still in your hands. Therefore, I think you just removed a bit of redundancy in the collection.

I was in a slightly similar dilemma before. I had the chance to choose between a 5711r and a 5960r grey dial - and just fell in love with the 5960r. I would have bought both if I had foreseen that Nautilus prices would go this crazy today, but I admit I am not good at predicting future value. Anyway, both are great watches, and choosing one over the other (value aside) is purely personal lifestyle/preference.

The opposite trend happened on me actually. I started PP with the perpetual calendar, annual calendar and world timer etc. but find my self rarely wear the calatrava patek and changed them to nautilus and aquanaut. I have no regret and enjoy the sport patek more.

Did you sell it after only owning it for a few days or a month or two?

If not, you're not a "flipper." :)

5711R prices seem to be softening of late. From being advertised at around the £100k mark they are now down to around £70k asking price.

Thanks. I love it and never imagined owning such a piece. Love the dial color and the layout.

The government is doing quite a good job so far. The people are generally cooperating. Not gonna lie; everyone is on high alert due to the SARS experience. Thanks. I just hope the spread can be effectively contained soon.

I still love my 5711/1R to bits. Would never trade that or my 5980/1R up. Well, I should have if I had a crystal ball as I could pick it up for cheaper now if I had sold it a few months ago and then stuffed some money in my pocket.

An evolving watch portfolio is what makes the hobby fun. Also no issues with you moving your watches at all. It’s like trading baseball cards in my mind

TW is doing a fantastic job as far as I can tell.

Here in Sg we are starting to see several cases of local transmissions with unknown source or links to the other infected individuals. Trying times.

We have a few cruise ships that want to dock and unload the passengers here. I hope everyone understands the inconvenience that would happen for that to happen. Good luck to us all!

Back to the topic of this post, I think it’s a good deal. I still think what we see now is a trend, which may well stay for a long time... I enjoyed every moment with my 5980/1A, but I enjoy as much now with my 5270P. It’s hard not to be affected by the market. I find it scary that recently I start to think it’s ok to pay 2-3x premium to obtain a hot piece. Haha

I will always look to move a watch that is not being worn and enjoyed. I don't like having money tied up in a watch that I do not feel special about or wear. If that watch has appreciated, all the better. There are so many great watches out there that I have not owned yet,why not get what you want.
