Using GMT as a Compass

Did anyone know you can use a GMT as a compass? I had heard it was possible to do but didn't know how to do it. It's pretty easy. It's not really a compass though and instead it's just a way of finding North.

This YouTube video is short and sweet and to the point! Pretty cool!

That YouTube seemed broken. Here is what I think you meant to post.

Yes, it’s a great watch! 3 time zones and an arrow that points to true north. Suck it G Shock!

That can be done with any watch, it's just slightly easier with a GMT hand.

On a regular watch point the hour hand to the Sun, then find half way between the hour hand and 12, that is South, and directly opposite is North (obviously).

I believe this might only work for the northern hemisphere, but very cool! Any watch that has hours/minutes can also be used as a compass!

I just found this out today. Yes, it will work with any watch, but with the GMT it’s dead on. Makes me love it even more.

Wow, never thought it could work as a compass. One more massive feature to be used by Explorers using Rolex Explorer.

100% this. Its good fun to do with kids, when they are starting out with watches.

Only true in northern hemisphere during normal time (not DST).
As mentioned by others, any analog watch will do the trick using the Hour hand and the 12’ marker.

In the video it looks like half way between the hour hand and 6 is south. I’m not seeing it if it’s really 12. Half between hour hand and 12 seems NE to me.
