Has anyone had the audacity to...
... throw their watch? While sitting in my friend's backyard recently, he was commenting on my Submariner and explaining how he would never trust himself with a Rolex because he is military and too scared he would damage it or have to treat it too delicately to enjoy it. So I took it off and tossed it across the grass to prove my point. Needless to say, the watch was unscathed and keeps time like a dream.

The big question that you haven't answered yet is....did it prove the point to your friend and will he be buying a Rolex soon?

How fast are we talking when you say across the grass? In some backyards that could be 2-3 ft
![]() Nonetheless, the answer for me is no either way. ![]() |

Have your buddy research the history of Submariners and Tudors in Vietnam and soldiers wearing them in the most inhospitable terrain for months at a time. Unscathed. And the watches today are built better. I regret not owning and wearing a Rolex during my 14 month tour in Afghanistan. Watches are made to be worn. Memories to be made. I still remember the knives I carried, the watch I wore (Casio G-Shock), etc.

Underarm or overarm throw? A gentle lob or quite forceful?
![]() There was a thread years ago where someone flung their Sub across a room during a 'debate' over the qualities of Rolex. IIRC it survived with some dents.

Why would you do that just to prove a point. Throwing a watch doesn't describe the wear and tear of normally wearing it lol

I love it! That’s what I’m talking about. Tired of reading about people crying about scratches and dirt in between the bezel. This shows that these are tool watches and they will take a beating.

You can also prove a point by dropping the Sub in the ocean. I am sure it will do fine and your friend will be very impressed. Afterall, Sub is meant to survive the ocean.

Well, that answers another "is it safe to" question.

Kikuo Ibe threw 200 prototypes out of an upper-floor bathroom window to come up with the G-Shock.

So as long as all military activity takes place on the grass, he should be ok.

See, those lugs serve a functional purpose after all.

I remember being at my mates birthday party and chatting with him and his father in law. We were talking about Rolex's and his father in law asked him to take his Sub off and then dropped it into his pint of beer! Not sure what it proved but was quite funny.

It would be funny if he got up and threw a GShock against a brick wall. Top that!

If you convinced him to buy a Sub, I hope he enjoys his investment when he receives it in 5-6 years and 2 engagement rings later!

People won't shower with their Rolex on.
That's where this misinformation about Rolex durability stems from. "what's the best cloth to gently coddle my watch with" "what kind of pillow do you lay your Rolex on when you go to bed" "I think I saw a hairline scratch on the clasp" "my Rolex got wet, the crown was fully screwed down, what's the chances water got into the movement"? "which car do I buy my AD to say thanks for getting me a Hulk" (alright, this one is a little silly). I don't have a huge watch collection, I'm not "wealthy", but some of the things I read here makes me think that a watch is the most exspensive thing some people own and if something happened to it they'd not be able to eat. I'd hate to live I fear that I may scuff up my watch - particularly seeing everything and anything (basically) can be fixed by RSC. |

I could talk anyone into the merits and resilience of a Rolex without throwing my watch. They are bulletproof but not scratch resistant unfortunately.

I’ve never cared what watch someone wears enough to throw mine.
