I was going to purchase a GMTIIC but over the past few months Panerai have really grown on me.

I must say thank you very much for the comparison as my short list comprises of the 233 (a little bit over my 5k budget second hand), 312 or the 320.

Nice post Louie... Very well done. Answers a lot of questions... This would be a good one for the other site as - many are asking the comparison question.

Great job!

Thanks for that Louie. Amazing pics. I really can't wait to get my hands on mine now. Dare I say I actualy prefer the 312 to the 233, in pics anyway. I haven't seen either of these in the flesh yet but have just reveived my receipt from David M Robinson from the deposit I placed over the phone, Kelly very kindly included a 2008 brochure and a Legendary Watches book!! Fantastic service!!
The 312 doesn't look as thick as I thought it might, pleased they didn't use the domed crystal.

If Panerai hadn't stuck the 9 on the dial and put on the small sub-dial i'd have got one as well, i'm not a fan of the radiomir style sub-dial, especially on a luminor/1950s watch

X2! i still prefer the dial layout of the 233s and the sexy dome crystal...312 is thick though, because it houses the auto mechanism..312 is better looking if you see it in person..looks classy and "clean" to me..

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

233 is nice, but I think the 312 is gaining it's popularity.

Will love to see one in person.

Awesome pictures louie. The crown side comparison, shows subtle differences.

Just curious why swapping your 233 around, what makes incoming better numbers?

312 is great for first time Panerai buyers. Existing owners, it depends on what you currently own. I'm not crazy about automatics yet.

This pics really gives us a good idea about the 3 day autos.I must say I like the larger/thicker case of the 312,the flattish crystal in combination with the 1950s case.It will look larger on the wrist, compared to the 233.I am a bit uncertain about the dial around the date window. The date looks a bit lost, compared to the rest of the dial info.I like the font size and the inclusion of the "9".I very slight cyclops, like on the 242 would have balanced it out or the inclusion of "3".Also,brushed ss is not my favourite, but suits the 1950s case nicely.

This is fantastic, just the comparison I was looking for! The 312 looks huge, the lugs and case look considerably larger than the 233. I think my preference is still for the 233. Thanks for the pics!

I totally disagree on the inclusion of a cyclops, that would really upset the symmetry of the dial and the crystal IMHO.

But I do agree wholeheartedly with the inclusion of the "3" on the dial and if the date window was repositioned to 4:30 then that would satisfy that issue perfectly.
