The 5990

If you’ve opened this post expecting to read something interesting, I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed! I don’t really have anything to say, other than I’ve had this watch for 18 months now and it just gets better and better.

I used to feel that it wore a little large on my wrist, and for sure it looks better on larger wrists, but I’ve now accepted that it’s a casual Nautilus and wearing large is fine.

As i say, if you were hoping for something interesting, I’m sorry! This is simply a 5990 appreciation post.

And Sam, if you’re lurking out there, thanks for helping me get it mate, i remain very grateful.

Looks Awesome...

If you don't mind the query how big is your wrist? Have not tried one on yet, but really self conscious on whether my girly wrists could pull it off.

It is HUGE! Enjoy it...

I always wondered why Patek doesn't make a travel-time-only Nautilus. Thinner, it could keep the traditional slim proportions. That'd probably be the pick of the range.

My wrist is 6.75” and while it has big presence, I don’t find it “huge” at all. In fact, I think the proportions work really well.

I've wanted a 5990 for a long time, but prices shot through the roof in the meantime and now my dealer "bundles" desirable pieces...
I guess I get it, but it sucks. :(

I love this watch! Any 5990 post w pics is great regardless of the reason imo.
Anyhow, question for you 5990 owners:
Have you ever had a situation where the hour pushers were pressed accidentally
and you didn’t notice until you realized the time was off? I always wondered if (depending how tight you wear it) the pushers were easily pushed without meaning to.

It hasn't happened to me, but my wrists are quite small so it sits higher than perhaps it might on larger wrists. Although I do wear it low down on the wrist so arguably more prone to the wrist-cocking action.

I would think that if the pushers were pressed accidentally, that both would be pushed at the same time. And if this happens, then nothing happens as there is protection in place to prevent this, as it would otherwise damage the movement (I think this is true, but don't quote me without research, as I may make you look daft!).

I would so love this watch but I feel like I would drive myself crazy trying to protect that bezel from scratches. Does that worry you at all or do you not care much?

Cared at first, then smashed it against a door handle and put a big scratch each side of the bezel, then hated it for a month, and since then haven’t cared one bit and now see every scratch as patina. So much so, i probably won’t bother getting it polished when it first goes in for service.

Great to know, thank you both for your input! I like the 5164 too, but let’s face it the side hour pushers are integrated way more beautifully on the 5990. One might argue most most onlookers wouldn’t even realize they are actual buttons they are designed so well. As for the 5164 the gap between the buttons is kind of ... well not as refined let’s say. IMO of course.
