Blue face - timeless?
Hey guys - curious what you guys think. The Nautilus, Royal Oak, Chronometre Bleu, Blue Skydweller… These are all pieces that seem to be enjoying a huge surge in popularity and are all BLUE faced. In fact, they are outsold and way harder to find than any of the same models in other colors (white, black, etc.)
It seems like this is true with almost any watch these days, even blue Datejusts are out of stock and dress watches are showing up in blue much more than they ever were. I’m curious to hear from folks here. In 10, 15, 20 years, do you think people will be looking at blue watches as a timeless thing? Or do you think they’ll revert to white, black (maybe silver and gold)? And blue will look less desirable and aesthetically pleasing in the future? I love the idea of buying less watches but keeping them for LIFE, so am concerned about investing a huge amount into a blue watch to be a lifelong watch. But not sure if that’s a singular concern or if others share it. |

IMHO blue is more timeless than green and orange, both of which have had time in the spotlight lately.

I think the blue dial is more enjoyable than the black (my wife's comment), so I've bought a submariner bluesy instead of the black one.

Beautiful in the eyes of a blue lover - and I’m in that cohort.
But not timeless since tastes change. Gold and Silver have been timeless but are now loved less…

Blue has always been a pretty classic color for watch faces. It's all the green and chocolate dials I expect to age less well.

Favorite watch of all time. I wish they hadn't jacked up the price so much.

a lot of great books and data on color theory out there, but blue is widely considered to be the most favored of all colors. despite it's connotation with "sadness" (in the english language), it's generally associated with calmness, coolness, serenity, peace, honesty, and tranquility. It's the color of the sky and the oceans. about as far from trendy as possible, has stood the test of time, multiple shades for diversity, and destined to be a favorite forever.

Blue face - timeless?
Black, white, silver, and blue dials are classic. Gold too for very high end watches like the DayDate.
Blue dials have been popular for decades. It’s not a sudden fad. Other colors come and go. Green for example. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think some watches with a blue dial can gain a more vintage/distinguished look faster than the identical watch with a black dial and I'm not sure why...possibly because the specific color of blue some makers use is more common in that particular era?

There will be a time where we will look back at all of this and shake our heads at how much money we were willing to part with just to follow the blue on steel trend. There will be a time where we will pay similar money for whatever else is the gout die jour then. In fact, I believe it has already begun, with gold coming much more into favor and steel having probably plateaued. Tastes evolve over time and the way this has blown up is probably not sustainable. As Franck Müllers weren’t in the 90ies, Panerais weren’t after 2013, Hublots and other huge watches weren’t after their time in the sun between 2005-2008 and Vintage isn’t now that we’re out of the 2010s.
But neither of these factors make blue dials unattractive.

My AD's allocation of blue Sky Dwellers accounts for 50% of their annual SS Sky Dweller allocation, but the demand is so high you would think the blue is twice as rare as the black or white. It's actually the other way round.
I won my first decent watch in a company incentive scheme back in the 1990s. Some years later when I wanted an upgrade, the watch which appealed the most, the first watch more expensive than a Swatch that I was buying with my own money, had a blue dial. So I guess that blue has always been a personal favourite option for watch dials. But I have to love the watch, not just the dial. ![]() The Carrera is particularly appealing because the blue is actually the AR coating inside the sapphire. This allows the dial to go from flat black to iridescent shimmering electric blue, and everything in between, depending on how light hits it. The majority of my watches have blue dials, mostly sunburst. For some reason, the blue SS Sky Dweller, awesome as it is, didn't appeal to me as much as the black. Also, at the time I had 3 blue dial Rolex, a green and a white. Black seemed the way to go and the black Sky Dweller dial is a rather subtle sunburst, so still interesting. What other people like or don't like doesn't affect my thinking. My money, my life, my watch. You should get whatever sings to you the loudest. |

I think blue is definitely a color that will be around forever on watch dials. Will it be as tradition/timeless as black, white, or silver….? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s a safe, primary color, so I don’t think it’ll ever be out of style.
I do think, as with most fashionable things throughout time, some shades of blue will be in flavor/popularity, and some won’t , as trends go back and forth. It’s of my absolute favorite colors on a watch dial, and Rolex does it very well. I’m getting my ice-blue dial back …..really miss that one. |

Black, White and Blue are classic dial colors and will be with us going forward. No issue with Blue going out of style. It never has.

Yes, VC is very greedy now, when they see OS is getting more popular, they jacked up the price by 11%.
