Being sold a fake from Torneau (Rolex Boutique)

I was scrolling past some stories as i was just catching up on some reading and i saw a post by someone who said they were sold a fake rolex at a boutique and i was a little shocked to see that as I never thought that would happen but wanted to see if you all had any stories of experiences like that.

I normally buy my watches from a rolex boutique which i understand are owned by Torneau right? or Bucherer i think? I've never really questioned the authenticity of an item coming out of a boutique...

Is it possible to be sold a fake? i mean maybe at a shady dealer or something like that with a super clone but that's generally pretty unlikely right?

I don't spend a lot of time inspecting my new purchase in store, i just go in, see if they have the model i want, and i buy and i walk out. I've never questioned the authenticity...do you? (especially from a rolex boutique in side say a mall..for example by me it's the rolex boutique inside south coast plaza...

I know they have another store Torneau by itself which has numerous brands, etc. but even, would questioning the authenticity be warranted at that store?

if it's new there's no chance it'll be a fake. tourneau sells pre owned watches though and i don't know what their process is (whether they open the watches up or not) so theoretically a fake can slip through, but also very unlikely given they're an AD and have a reputation to maintain

The odds of being sold a fake via an AD or boutique are similar to that of one of Putin's ICBMs landing right on your house.

Not zero, but close to it.

yeah i can definitely understand being a little more cautious out of the regular torneau store where pre-owned watches can slip by, etc. but a rolex specific boutique...highly unlikely right?

didn't one guy get a brand new DJ from an AD that ended up being fugazi?

Never say never.....it was a well documented thread and in the end the AD + Rolex made it right for that gent.

Totally different circumstance. Watch has been bought and returned by previous customer (who’d apparently stolen the movement out of it).

Also, side note, multiple ADs run boutiques, not just Bucherer.

Yes, there was a story here of a DJ being sold with a fake movement. But the piece had been bought and returned. And the AD (which by then no longer was an AD) made good by a refund or something like that — all set forth in the post.

Quite a lame comment.

There’s more people walking around today with what they believe are totally 100% genuine Rolexeseses and won’t ever know. Simply too much easy money available in watches.

So yes, it’s possible imop but unlikely from an AD with any ethics.

If you “Saw a post from someone” that Rolex factory makes the fake watches too, are you going to believe that as well?

Ok, story time. Few years ago I purchased Air King at official rolex AD. I remember that day I was in a rush, so I picked up the watch without sizing it. I thought I will go to my usual watch guy and I will size the watch there. About a week or two weeks later I went to my guy to size a watch and he was like “wow Ross you got screwed! Where did you buy this fake watch!” I was like what do you mean. He told me the watch is 1,000% super fake. And he is the big watchmaker in the area, he constantly services Pateks, Audemars and other super complicated watches and no matter what I told him he was convinced the watch is a super good fake and AD sold me a fake watch. Just for my sanity I took a watch to 2 different AD’s just to make sure it was legit and they told me of course it was. So, no matter how knowledgeable some people are rule of the thumb is you buy from official Rolex AD you good.

So what ever happened, and did the watchmaker tell you how he “knew” it was fake? And was the AK new or pre owned?

Exactly. If the back was opened - easier to tell. Also, many SAs don't know the subtle fake vs real standouts. With many ADs selling second hand Rolex too, it's possible someone accidentally sold a New Old Stock watch sourced elsewhere which was actually a high end fake.

Wait, so who was wrong? The 2 ADs who “of course “vouched for their corporate buddy, or your amazing watchmaker?

Buy new from an official AD. One which is also NOT in the business of reselling.

New from a Rolex AD is not a fake.
