WTS: Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar 5212A

Price: USD 36,000

Description

This is the Patek Philippe Weekly Calendar Calatrava reference 5212A. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has always synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s. Incidentally, the Calatrava was also the first model released by the Stern family as the staple time-only watch in the brand’s collection.

To understand the Calatrava, one must hark back to the roots of the model with the reference 96. The first Calatrava was also the debut of the brand’s first in-hose caliber, the cal. 920. Produced over a 40-year span, the 96 would set the foundations of all future Calatravas. Dimunitive, minimalist and dressy, these characteristics would go on to define the future references within the line as the brand’s flagship dress piece. The reference 570 was released during the same period as the 96 with a larger case size, though the smaller case size was more favourable during that time period. Fundamentally, the idea of the Calatrava as the time-only flagship remained the same, though later variations would show an evolution in both design and complications.

Inspired by the jumbo-sized 2512 from 1955, the 5212A made its debut in Baselworld 2019 as the first Calatrava with a weekly calendar complication. Powered by a brand new self-winding cal. 26-330 featuring a 53-toothed week wheel, the 5212A was a whimsical and refreshing evolution of the most classic line in the brand’s collection. While the weekly calendar may not be the most functional or utilized complication, it certainly is a unique one that sets the 5212A apart from the rest of the line and is nice to have nonetheless to count the weeks in a year. Easily adjustable via the two pushers on either side of the crown, the complication even takes into consideration the occasional year with 53 weeks.

With a legible display of the day, week, month and date complication on an off-white dial littered with handwritten-style typography, the reference is unlike any Calatrava produced till date with its flair and idiosyncrasy and is a study in reinvigorating a collection. Looking nothing like a classic Calatrava, it is refreshing to see a traditional brand like Patek Philippe attempt to spice things up. From the case to the font to the complication, the 5212A is highly distinct and stands alone in the Calatrava line. Add to the fact that steel Calatravas are the least produced, this reference could very well be one of the most outstanding in time to come.
