Buying for the wife

Hi all,

I just wanted some input from you all as regards buying my wife a Rolex. We went shopping yesterday and originally she wanted a diamond encrusted Tag Heuer Monaco, which when I saw the price (over £4k) I suggested that she should look at Rolex. Being not that savvy on the ladies range we looked around a no. of AD and homed in on the midsize SS datejust (Think it might be 36mm or maybe smaller?) with oyster bracelet, white gold fluted bezel, silver dial with diamond insert.

The only problem was no dealer had this combination in and it is difficult to imagine the watch simply choosing from a catalogue of options! I really just wondered if any of you had bought a special someone a Rolex if so, what combination! Suggestions and opinions please!

Well if that is the combination she likes & wants you should ask your AD to order it in.
You may be able to get one in just to check it out without a commitment to buy!

At the end of the day it does not matter what any of us on here think or recommend, its your wife that has to like & want to wear the watch. She will know in her heart what she wants.

One dealer did offer to see if they could get the combo in, and I think having re-read my post it was the 31mm version which is the mid size. Maybe I'll call them to get it in.

My wife isn't into watches like myself, I think if I gave her no input, she would have liked the Tag Monaco, however from yesterday she is beginning to get excited by all the combo/options you can get with a Rolex. As there are so many, I was just looking to see what other combinations people have tried and love!

I personally prefer bigger sizes on women, maybe an Air king (34mm) or an Explorer 1 (36mm), but a midsize DJ in the combination you described sounds good.

I would caution you to first check out a diamond dial watch before ordering since IMO, pictures don't capture the look too well. Wouldn't want to be in a commitment to buy and end up not liking the watch when you get it.

I think you already know this but definitely get her what she wants, no matter what. I've made the mistake of buying my wife something that I thought was better or thought was a better value and have gotten burned. In the end, she'll be wearing it, not us.

My wife chose a TT lady DJ on jubilee with a rhodium dial and gold roman numerals and fluted bezel. It's quite handsome. The grey dealer we bought it from had dozens of dials and bezels to choose from had she wanted a different dial or bezel, but she liked the watch exactly as it was.

Let her try all the sizes.. and see what she likes.. then the different dials.. my wife wears a Two Tone Sub (16613) with Slate Serti Dial and she loves it... she got used to the size of the Sub.

The Mid Size is great, exactly the size my fiancee likes and I will get her for a wedding present.

This is exactly what I bought my wife recently. I was trying to persuade her to go for something around the £3k mark but as soon as she saw what the AD was wearing (female wearing the above model) she loved it instantly. I have to say it does look stunning.

On a side note does anyone know if this model holds its value well? We're not looking at this watch as an investment but I'm just interested to know how the ladies models compare in terms of holding their value.

Thanks for the feedback, having spent some time looking in dealers and on Rolex's website she does like the midsize with silver dial, however after "Timber Loftis" comment, she really likes the Rhodium dial, however online this is only illustrated on another model, can someone explain to me the difference between the "Date" model and the "Date Just" model, as I can only see it's basically the 34mm V's 31mm for the mid size or am I missing some other feature!
