How to use "site:" in Google with Rolex Forums?

I haven't been to this site in a long time so I feel like something might have changed. For many sites, I do the following to perform a Google search on the domain to find relevant topics to read. An example:

site:rolexforums.com rolex after service

Google will normally return results but I'm getting none for TRF. Does anyone know how to do this?

It’s not you. I can’t find any TRF results on Google even when I search for “Rolex forums”

The search format you’re using (site:…) is correct

I just checked for myself. It’s true. TRF doesn’t show up. At least not in the first several pages it doesn’t…

When I google "rolexforums" it's the first link on the page.

The second link is "Are "The Rolex Forums" run by an asshole?" on reddit. :

Google follows the money. TRF may not be feeding the kitty.

if google sees a robots.txt, it must stop crawling within the site.

I noticed the same. Can't be good for TRF from a growth perspective. I am too dumb to know how this happens.

I hope anybody that had a watch stolen and posted the serial number on TRF also posted the info somewhere else on the internet that Google is indexing.

That's true, Dave. An unintended consequence of locking out the crawlers.

I'm still chasing 2 as yet unrecovered older Rolexes and thankfully I cross posted on VRF.

My post is still at the top of Google results when people search for the serial numbers.

robots.txt has been around on the web since, my gosh, feels like forever. My god, I looked it up:

"Part of the Robot Exclusion Protocol, robots. txt was created in 1994 by Martijn Koster after crawlers overwhelmed his website. Though not technically an 'internet standard,' many web developers consider it so, and search engines adopted it to help manage their server resources."

Note that not all search engines / etc follow the webmaster's / server/bandwidth provider's wishes in their robots.txt file.

Look at what the robots.txt file says. It is written in plain text, so should be easy to understand :)

Could someone translate for the uneducated here?! More context would be helpful; why use a robots.txt concept, why do any of this, the benefits/drawbacks of limiting what google can search on the forum, the motivation behind it, etc? Thanks in advance.

robots.txt prevents Google and others from indexing a site.

Pro: I do not know.

Con: Users cannot search site using Google, they are limited to the lobotomized search the site features.

I do not get it. Doesn't mean there is not a great reason. Doesn't mean the site owner should not be able to allow/restrict search as they prefer. It is literally the owners data.

Same.

Tried site: rolexforums.com as suggested here, and nothing turns up (other than links to other forums and retailers).

Understood, makes sense, thanks for this info.

I suppose another pro or con depending on who you are…..could this be seen as perhaps convenient for Rolex if there was a controversial topic that maybe didn’t reflect well on Rolex, something that they didn’t want easily searched via the most widely utilized search engine?
