Daytona Cosmograph in Space with US Astronaut

Navy SEAL, Physician, Harvard graduate, Astronaut Jonny Kim is bringing the “Cosmograph” back to Rolex’s Chronograph. He’s been wearing the 126500LN “Panda” aboard the international space station.

Dr Kim’s is an Iraqi war hero with over 100 missions and a Silver Star for saving lives in the line of fire.

I do think that Rolex somehow had something to do with this. But the branding association is very favorable for them. These “Captain America” Rolexes are going to be worth a pretty penny if they come up for auction in 30y.

Jonny Kim is an American hero and national treasure. I’d put his resume up against anyone!

Great podcast to give a bit more background on this amazing man.

I am in awe of people like this who are able to accomplish so many amazing feats. Any one of his credentials would be impressive in their own right.

Navy SEAL, Astronaut, AND a physician?! Has cloning been realized ;)
I’m certainly impressed and curious to see how he managed all this time wise, unless he just did med school but no training/practicing. The only thing missing is a Rhodes Scholarship.

BIG EDIT: Nope, I’m way off…he is THE MAN! Amazing story of overcoming difficulties, achievement at highest levels, residency training/practice (!), AND he’s a dad! Maaad respect!

Rolex should have sent Dr. Kim up there with some kind of 1 of 1 meteorite SS daytona. In my opinion this should eclipse any watch Paul Newman ever wore , and I like Paul's contributions to the watch hobby.

This guy is the real deal. I listened to his podcast with Jocko, he had to overcome so much to be where he is now.

I knew he had a Pepsi but didn’t realize he also had a Daytona. Should we assume Rolex gave these to him since he’s the poster boy of their marketing or did he buy them himself?

Agreed - this is much more 1980’s National Geographic than 2025 Instagram.

This is exactly the kind of guy that my local AD says high demand Rolexes were designed and manufactured (and allocated) for.

Yes, the automatic works is dependant on motion, not on gravity.

Well it also works on gravity because as your wrist moves, the rotor wants to stay pointed down so it rotates down. In no gravity that wouldn't be the case. But I suspect that if you do move your wrist fast enought for the rotor to spin, it will still work. In fact it might even spin longer due to less friction. So if your movements are quick enough, it will probably end up winging up faster. And the power reserve will likely be more as well due to less friction.

That’s pretty interesting, I always assumed the Speedmaster won out because it was manual wound vs automatic.

Video of a M.A.D.1 rotor spinning in space would be pretty epic imho. Gyroscope speed

Allegedly, the Daytona was in the running for the watch to be worn by the astronauts (hence why it's called the Cosmograph), but failed the vacuum test. So the Speedmaster was chosen instead. The rest is history.

Agreed. It would also probably spin like crazy without gravity trying to slow the rotor down.

Sort of reminds me of one my ex-bosses. He was a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. He was in the CIA. He was in the astronaut program but never flew. He was also a math professor for an Ivy League school.

Pretty impressive resume.

Just a quick correction to something I wrote before: after med school he only did an internship year in emergency medicine. He didn’t complete the full residency. So, he didn’t really practice as a doctor. Instead, he opted to go into the astronaut training program. Seriously, you can’t do/be everything…but he comes darn close.
