60th Birthday gift ideas

I’m really terrible about appropriate gifts for people and occasions. Even Google and AI can’t help me

Wife and I invited were invited to a 60th birthday dinner at a fancy French restaurant next month by someone who I wouldn’t say is a good friend, but more like a casual acquaintance as he works with a neighbor and we see him when he’s in the neighborhood and have a glass of wine.

Typically I bring a couple bottles of nice/expensive wines as gifts to such an event but this guy is in the business and anything I can procure would be child’s play and perhaps an insult to him so I have to pivot and think of something else. Any suggestions from the brain trust is greatly appreciated!

Get him a gift certificate to some kind of experience. Indoor sky diving, cooking class, drive an exotic car on the track, and nice show. Something to build a memory.

If he is an aficionado, perhaps half a dozen crystal wine glasses?
Tiffany’s always does nice work.
Waterford is classic.

Enjoy the party!

I don’t know what to recommend.

Honestly from the way you’re describing it, I’d feel a bit out of place and probably find an excuse not to go (sort of).

60th birthday and casual acquaintance. I say just show up, enjoy the meal and company and forget about a gift. Gifts for a 60 year old friend much less acquaintance is ridiculous. We aren’t ten year old children anymore being invited to a birthday party anymore.

I was reading about a pill that's really popular with 60-year-old men.

It’s not his wife’s birthday

In all seriousness OP I’m probably not old enough to offer an educated opinion on the subject (on the south side of 40 years), but I second the suggestion from function12. Can’t really tell what part of the country you’re in but if there’s an exotic car driving experience nearby a gift card to that would be perfect for someone’s 60th.

I had the absolute pleasure of going to SpeedVegas a couple of years ago and getting to track some very fast exotic cars under the guidance of expert instruction was an absolute blast!

Again, depending on where you’re located the Porsche driving experiences are said to be top notch also! Another idea would be a round of golf at a local course of merit. If he works in wine I’d just about bet you any watch in my safe he plays golf lol.

Tiffany makes a set of four espresso cups in their signature light blue color. At circa $200, May be too costly. You can find Keurig coffee makers on Amazon for less. Or find out what wine he likes and get it. Or a bourbon , like Blanton’s, a little hard to get.

I don’t think I would be one to buy a gift in that situation. I know if I was that man, I would not expect anything.

Could you possibly enjoy a drink or digestive with him towards the end of the evening? Let him choose something and have it put on your tab, perhaps.

I have given this exact gift thanks to the suggestion (probably yours). Espresso cups went over great!

^^^ this big time.

OP: There are soooo many people who are multi-mil/bil nowadays, so we know that 'things' are borrrring. Get them an experience, I'd also suggest Skydiving or auto track, something that really makes them (kinda sorta) feel 'close to death', but not of course... and is very exciting.

If they're a big strong man's man, see who offers to let you use big-arse construction machines... and have fun.

Skip the gift and get him a nice card. He's a distant acquaintance.

For protocol sake, you want to acknowledge the occasion, but you aren't close enough to require a gift of substance. A card ticks the box.

I agree. Maybe slip a $5 in there for fun.

Maybe a cool coffee table book. The royal oak 50th anny book is prettt cool. Cheaper option that people seem to like is the slim Aaron’s book.
You could pick up the tab? You didn’t really give a budget, I can’t imagine spending more than 200 for something like this but whatever you want

He's got a new 992 911 S in Gulf blue that he will never put on the track, but I like the idea of the track experience where he can flog an exotic around.

This is another good ideas as his GF is a coffee lover.

Also toying with the idea of getting some hand rolled cigars from of the old school Cubans in Miami. Since Cuban cigars are illegal in the US, the next best thing may be some fresh rolled from the guys that used to roll them in Cuba.

Do what do normally do, wine, and let it go at that. I seriously doubt he will be insulted about anything. The last he wants is for you to fret over his birthday present.

Since he is in the wine business, a set of high-quality wine glasses won't be a bad gift for him.

Since he's only a casual acquaintance, don't get him a gift. Just wish him a happy birthday.
