New Submariner in UK

Hello, newby here, please forgive me if i'm asking the blindingly obvious!

You guys know your stuff! and any advice would be gratefully recieved.

I'm trying to find the best place to get a submariner in the uk. Here in Nottingham, there's only one supplier, and he's quoting silly supply times.

Any advice on best place to buy?

I'm off to Vancouver in a few weeks, would it be better t buy their, or am i dillusioned?

Thanks in advance for your advice :)

Try Watchfinder.com ....they can get you one almost immediately. Ok they are not a main agent but their watches are sourced from main dealers

Thanks Baxta/Bama,

I have to say Baxta, I've looked at the watchfinder site and it looks very tempting. I'm not sure if they have a good or bad reputation, so i'd be glad to hear from anyone who had dealt with them.

I looked at getting an Omega Seamaster or Seamaster chrono, but figured i'd regret it in a year or so.

Any views on the Sub as a first rolex?

If you like the look; you cannot go wrong with a Sub as your first Rolex.

It's good looking, dependable, durable, and there is that sense of karma (or whatever) when it's on our wrist.

Hi newsub, welcome!

I can't help you on pricing in the UK, I'm on the wrong side of the pond LOL!

But a Sub as a first Rolex (or second, third, fourth,....) is perfect!
Such a wonderfull watch with a storied history, the sub (date or non-date) is the quintessential sports watch. Strong, reliable, accurate, and able to dress up or down, many have used it as their only watch for a lifetime.

It is simply an EXCELLENT choice!!

thanks

thanksfor your comments so far guys!

this is the first time i've had enough money to get a rolex, so didn't want to mess it ip by getting a model i'd regret later, but it sounds like i've made the right choice!

the only thing now is getting hold of one. i'm about 130 miles from london and don't get there as often as i'd like :(

wehat are prices like in the US and canada? the sub is £2840 in the UK - or about $5700

Hi Newsub and welcome. When you are in Vancouver you have a choice of three AD's in the downtown core, all minutes walk from each other, here are the links to them, you may want to contact them in advance to see if they have the watch, be aware that you will not pay tax(13%) and I know for a fact that Palladio will sell you the watch and with no tax paid, you simply have to show your bill recipt at YVR when you leave!
Here is the link to Palladio so you can find out the pricing etc
http://www.palladiocanada.com/start.htm

Montecristo http://www.montecristojewellers.ca/ (the one you want is the flagship store, it is right opposite Palladio. to give you an idea of location it is minutes walk from Canada place (the famous white sails building on the waterfront!

The last one is Brinkhaus http://www.brinkhaus.ca/
This store is on Georgia and Burrard street, just across the street from the fairmont hotel Vancouver

Hope that helps and enjoy your visit to this Wonderful city. if you need any help about the city let me know!
All the best.
Ian

ps. To give you an idea on Canadian prices a new SS ceramic bezel GMT is CAD$7700 without tax thats about 3,630 UK pounds

Do your homework before you go. Know what your watch costs at home including the taxes and "fees". When you go to Canada I am sure you will have a much better selection and prices. The post above had great ideas. If you use a credit card it will usually give you a much better currency conversion rate. The savings on the sales tax for visitors always makes a big difference. Also, I know at Heathrow they have a great shop in the terminal that I think is duty-free (if you have a ticket out of the UK). If you risk buying one before you bet to Canada, you might get a good deal. Good luck.

I know a dealer who has one available for £2650 (maybe a little less if you push). Unused Z serial 2 year warranty etc.

PM if you want the details or use the info to drill your dealer down to £2750.

My local AD in the North West has had one in the window for a few weeks - also had an SD and a non-date SS Sub along with a Sub LV and a selection of Explorers and a GMTII (old model). About a week since I last looked but even if the SS Sub Date has been sold they should be able to get you another one in a few weeks (one of the pleasures of living in a small town with a small independant AD). Probably not much chance of a discount but if you have cash you never know.

Mappin & Webb have a shop in T2 Heathrow but although they discount (basically you don't pay the VAT) you have little or no chance of getting a SS Sub Date out of them so I wouldn't waste your time. If you buy outside the EU then remember that if Customs catch you on your return you will be hit with a bill for the VAT (17.5%) and a possible penalty for non-declaration -this does happen so beware!!!

If you want the details of my local AD then PM me.

All the best.

Probably the best decision you will make this year...........a classic man's watch that will still look fantastic in 30 years time. A sub was my first Rolex and it brings me so much pleasure.

Bought my new ss sub from them. They have a bricks and mortar office in Maidstone and are quite happy for you to visit by appointment. Speak to Jonathan Brett, he is an ace bloke and will sort you out no problem

I can confirm that neither Watches of Switzerland nor Ernest Jones in Birmingham have ANY Sub variant, so no need to go there.

P.S. Nice choice.

pre-owned Sub

Hi,

I bought a SS Sub [14060m-no date] pre-owned from Watches of Switzerland in New Bond St London a couple of weeks ago. It was a 'D' [Oct 2005] still in original warranty, mint condition, box/papers etc newly serviced with one years g'tee from the shop [Rolex AD.] I paid £1870 which i think was Ok given that it came from an AD.

Similarly priced examples on the net were sometimes 10 years old when i checked so be careful. I love my sub, at the minute, i can't imagine wearing any other watch ever again [and i have 50+].

Have a good long look at the no-date sub, the dial is well balanced without the COSC script and the cyclops. Also it will be discontinued in its current form, perhaps making it a classic for the future. In my opinion it is also the watch that is true to the heritage of Rolex - a tough no nonsense watch that just tells the time accurately in any situation. I mean what diver actually needs a date on their watch Do they go under water for that long?? For similar reasons i am not a fan of the TT Subs - I mean what true tool watch has Gold in it?? Sorry JJ

Of course i am biased in favour of the 14060m as i own one!!!!!!

Regards

Tim

Go to www.yell.com, enter Ernest Jones and/or Goldsmith, guarantee within half an hour of calling around you'll find an AD with one in stock. I wouldn't use Watchfinder after the experience of a Newturfer who had problems with a used purchase from there.

Rolex UK have asked a couple of times where watches were sourced when I called them, ie within the UK, so I'd enquire if you buy Grey whether it is a UK, or at least an EU watch.

Is the no date Sub not COSC certified? ie not a Chronometer?

Thanks for all your help guys, the deed is done!

I have ordered my ss sub from watchfinder, and should have it by the end of the week

Thank you baxta and adam b for your advice! I asked them whether the watch is sourced from the uk or abroad, both apparently. So I asked them to guarantee I would get a uk one before i ordered.

They have a 7 day return policy, but i'm hoping i dont have to use it!!

they have also offered to adjust the bracelet for me. Is this something easy I can do myself or should I take them up on the offer?

Hi newsub
I'm from Grantham. I bought my Sub 3 weeks ago from an AD in Crewe. Although I absolutely love my watch I've got a feeling this is going to be an expensive hobby

Thanks Ian, I'm looking forward to it!

Did Toronto last year, great city, so i'm sure Vancouver will be just as nice.

I'm staying at the delta suites, close to the places you mentioned. i'm open to recommendations as to what to do while there. I've heard about some tree top cable place not far, sounds fun!

Apparantly there is a huge fireworks display while I'm there (30 july for 11 days)
