1980’s Rolex Explorer II Help, hands!
I’ve been trying to re-do my White Dial Explorer after water damage ruined my dial and hands.
I’ve been able to find a very nice original dial with great looking patina on the aftermarket but have had miserable luck with the hands. I purchased one set that was perfect but ended up being for the wrong movement, and after 8 months of searching I was finally contacted by a gentleman who said he had the original hands for the 3085 movement that match the White dial perfectly. I recently received those hands and although they are “perfect” it seems that the standoff on the second hand is too small and it rubs on the hand below it, (according to my local authorized Rolex watchmaker). Would anyone here know why there would be different handsets for the same movement, and what would be my best bet to resolve, it seems futile to me at this point to try and keep buying hands since my only way to identify the items is by movement. But obviously that will not suffice. Help! thank you

The sweep second hand post is too short so not made for that movement he sold you the wrong hand. Rikki

So your saying that if I continue to look for a set for the 3085 I should be fine?

yes the hands are movement specific so mix and match doesn't work if you don't know how the movement is constructed. I've heard this hand story more times than I care to remember. Why not send to an authorised watchmaker and get new hands? Are you trying to be period correct? Rikki

The watch is at my friendly neighborhood authorized watchmaker, but we have never discussed "new hands". No reason other than I though finding hands on the secondary market would be easier and a third the cost.
But no, I'm not trying to be period specific. I'll ask my watchmaker to get a quote on a new set.
