Newer Generation Markets

How would Rolex survive with the younger generation? i see a lot of people which are in the same age group as I am (early 20s) chooses AP ROO, Richard Mille, Hublot, and Panerai over Rolex. Noting the fact that the generation before me born in the 70s and 80s prefers Rolex over Omega, Panerai, and other brands. Predicting in the next 10 to 20 years would people shy away from Rolex? Which would eventualy make the piece less liquid in the market.

Right now they prefer AP, Hublot, Panerai etc... but they'll come around at some point

It's gotta be where you are. I'm 28 and anyone I see around my age has a Rolex if they are wearing a nice watch. I've only seen one Patek.

They will come around. I was a Rolex hater till I put one on my wrist. A solid, reliable and tough watch. Can't say the same of the other "nice" watches...

When I was at late 20s, I was wearing a Rolex. Now, 2 decades passed, I am still wearing a Rolex though a different one. Preference no doubt will change over years but the reliability of Rolex has not changed and it still earns my trust and I will still wear Rolex.

I'm 37 and these are exactly my thoughts. As soon as I put it on my wrist I knew that is it.

Brand rotation. Most consumers do this. It's nothing new.

True in Indo...all my younger cousins (in their early 30s) are into Panerai. I'm in my mid-40s, and finally moved back to Rolex, after decades away.

I didn't want to be like my Grandfather, Father, or Uncles.

By the way, your English is better than my Bahasa. My cousins say my Bahasa is bengkok from living in the States too long ~ takes me about a week for it to come back.

i think Tudor is now the natural gateway to eventual Rolex ownership rather than the 'B' brand it was in the 60's - 90's. however, people of influence and marketing also play a huge part in purchase decisions and brand association development. the rolex spotting and celebrity threads always have a good turnout for a reason.

I really didn't like Rolex until I finish my grad school. I was into bigger watches (Breitling).
Now, can't wear a watch over 41mm. Lol

Yes but mostly older, very rarely you can spot them on the wrists in their early 30s or late 20s most of the wear PAMs and APs

I own ROLEXs APs PPs RMs JLCs UWERK and SEIKOs etc.. Been thru the full circle, bought and sold lots, including MB&Fs but my heart still with ROLEX and PP. I understand what you mean, but in my humble experience ie IMHO i came a full circle from starting from ROLEX back in my late teens and now I am 40+ been thru lots of watches and I honestly say ROLEX is still, to me, VERY special! I doubt I will ever not have a Rolex in my humble limited collection.

One of my WIS pal once told me, I don't fully agreed with him but I find HIS experience very interesting and humorous... He said, Rolex is the wife so robust and never fail, PP the beloved mistress, delicate and sweet, while the rest.... You can imagine... LOL....

Ditto. Im 36 now and a few years back all I had where pams, un, breitling, omega, etc but after my first foray into the world of Rolex (a 1975 1680), I can't see myself putting anything else on... Just purchased my second Rolex today, a 116710 blnr and it certainly won't be my last..there's just something about the brand and history that makes me an extremely proud owner of one.

It depends from person to person. I had friends at 17 years old with GMTII's and other SS Sport models. I personally liked Rolex from a young age because they just seemed to be THE watch to have. Plus, parental influence.. I will keep buying Rolexes until I can afford my grail (one of the PP 5970 watches, I like the P but I'd probably be satisfied with an R). I still defend Rolex over PAM and Hublot when people suggest that Rolexes are too old fashioned for me. Plus, Rolex Oyster Professional models undoubtedly hold their value best. Especially coupled with price increases, in 5 years I can probably break even on a watch I purchased today. PAM hardly holds its value as well as Rolex.

Funny, as a youth I was in college for nine years starting off as an English major/poet, getting a degree in Biology and another in Chemical Engineering. After the Chemo E degree I was more interested in cars, sailing, martial arts, motorcycles, and dating. Watches were hardly on the horizon although I've worn one since I was about 10 y/o. Most youth today as far as I can tell don't have watches and seem to use their Cellular computers as their time keeping devices. My kids (22 and 27) both have watches which I've given them. The watches aren't special and they don't wear them that much. Youth seems like a hard nut to crack.

IMHO the Hublots, limited edition ROOs and the likes are just fads. I see they are popular with the younger folks but again IMHO, Rolex is timeless and those are NOT.

Rolex is one of those watches that will survive all the flipping that one does at an earlier stage in the collection.

PS:Sorry if I offended anyone.
