Newbie with a question

I just purchased a 164. When the crown protector lever is in closed position can the crown still turn? Is it supposed to be this w

congrats, it is a beautifull watch.
yes, it can turn, but you shouldn't do that often.

Yes it turns but don't do it with the crown in the closed position.

I turned it with lever closed and thought it was defective. Thanks for info guys. Do you think I damaged watch by turning it?

no it don't damage so easily. i read once the frogmen always do that when diving.

It wears out the seals quickly. The lever is used to push the crown tight against the seals to keep the water out. Turning the crown with the lever closed will cause heavy friction between metal and rubber, prematurely wearing down your rubber seal and consequently compromising the waterproofness of your watch.
