Does your Rolex ever make you unconfortable

Hello guys,

Just thinking of what times my Rolex might make me uncomfortable or might not fit in and I might just rather wanna put on a much cheaper watch Because of jealousy, or what image it might give of you or what people might think or just because an expensive watch will just give the wrong impression.

I am a person that hates to attract much attention, less then average attentions fits me just perfect. And that goes with everything not just my watch. I know some times when I rather choose to put on Pulsar or Police rather of less price then my Rolex just because I believe it might attract the wrong type of attention. Like with some of my relatives. The reason is not that I am embarrassed or anything. I just know that we got a very different point of view when it comes to money and how to manage and spend it.

So does your Rolex or any other expensive watch ever make you uncomfortable or give you the wrong type of attention?

Almost nobody knows that my watch is a Rolex. If they do, it's likely that they are wearing one too.

Most people don't even notice you have a Rolex on unless they are into watches or you brag about it. About attracting the wrong attention use your common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Anything can happen in anyplace, be alert and know where you are.

If you worked for it and earned it then it shouldn't matter what people think. Especially those who are in your working circle. You know your finances better than anyone else and this is something you choose to spend your money on.

People often fail to understand how others have different passions or backgrounds even when salaries could be the same. I know tons of people who like going out every weekend, spend tons on dinner or parties, travels globally every year and goes wild with common expenses... that adds up quickly. I'm a person that likes the simpler things but dabble in watches and cars and a vacation from time to time. The rest I save or get to do whatever I want with it.

To each their own.

It really all depends on the environment. At work, I proudly wear my Rolex. At family gatherings, I wear my swatch watch. But in all honesty, 98% of people do not even look to see what watch one is wearing unless they’re looking to rob you.

These post always come off conceited to me...

Why do people think they will get attention because of a watch?

I think these posts are usually a form of reverse-arrogance...

These posters are so wrapped up in their own appearance, they pretend to be humble...

Long story short....

If a watch makes the wearer uncomfortable, then the wearer is FULLY CONSUMED with themselves....Because they are always aware of the presence on their wrist...They think about it. They keep looking at it. They look to see if other people look at it. They worry about other people's feeling if other people see it. They worry about their environment while wearing it. etc.....

Piss off...

Put it on and forget about it...

As others have said. No one cares - and if they do care, you can talk to them in reference numbers and not model names (which is cool).

Example: I was in the doctor last week, needed to take my watch off for the Doc to look at my wrist, he said "nice looking watch, is it an Omega?".. I said, "oh, thanks... yeah"...

As soon as I recall all of the sacrifices I made along the way, no, I only think about the satisfaction I get knowing that it came with many years of hard work.

I find that it is nice to have a variety of watches across a wide range of prices, but it's mainly because I like watches across a wide range of prices.

I don't have to worry too much about being a target of robbery anymore, but I have lived in places where people would cut off your arm off, or shoot you in the face, to steal a nice watch.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

As far as what people think of my watches, I'm not much concerned, as long as they are well behaved.

I actually disagree here. Original poster question is valid...there are many of us who care about people's perception as there are professions where income is directly tied to "style choices." This has nothing to do with pride or ego. Those choices can include, but not limited to:
-Your watch, suit, or clothes, etc
-whether or not you wear a beard (yes I know many who find facial hair offensive)
-your car

I look after a sales team in high tech. I encourage moderate approach to all those items above as we sellers don't need any excuse to offend another in a high stakes transaction. Guy who drives a yellow 911, president Rolex, wears a 5 o'clock shadow, suit with high water pants no socks, with man jewelry would be offensive to many..long before he ever opens his mouth. So yes...it matters.

Amen. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Unless it’s covered in diamonds wearing a Rolex is MUCH different that wearing a crazy suit or driving a yellow 911.

This exact thread pops up once every 3-6 months. Honestly, there are times it may feel awkward, but unless you bring it up, no one else will. Further, most typically won’t even notice. We live in a world where the idea of Rolex may speak volumes. However, on the wrist, an Apple Watch is way more distinct and likely to “display” wealth in eyes of others. Those that notice a Rolex, likely have one themselves.

Don’t really think about it much anymore. I just enjoy wearing my watches.

Some people do notice and that’s fine. I rock my Pepsi most of the time and it is a utilitarian steel piece at the end of the day. I’m not flashing solid gold and because it’s a 5 digit it looks less like jewelry. Milgauss is quirky.

Next watch will be a yellow gold Day-Date which will be attention grabbing and I’ll likely have to selectively wear it due to my age and status in my profession.

I understand what you mean. I often consider who I will be with before I get dressed (specifically referring to watches and cufflinks). If the people I will be with are in a different income grouping (either making or having less money) I tend to tone things down significantly. I can get through a meal or even a weekend without the good stuff if it means keeping everyone comfortable.

Like most people say, nobody even notices. And I wear a TT DJ41, kinda flashy. Wear it every day.

That's a bit harsh I think depending on the situation... A lot of time and thought (like 25 years of thinking about it) went into buying my sub. It seemed like a LOT of money to spend on a watch. And it is, relative to what lots of people spend; if they even wear a watch anymore. But I wanted one for about as long as I can remember and finally gifted myself one. It seemed like a big decision.

I felt tremendously self conscious the first few weeks I was wearing it. I knew what it cost but of course almost no one else did. And yeah, like everyone says hardly anyone noticed. I worked almost exclusively in marine photography at the time so a few people knew what it was but not most. At worst, I figured coworkers just considered it an eccentricity.

Now of course it's just the watch I put on in the morning. I still get a lot of enjoyment from it but have long since gotten over being self conscious. But I understand how a new, first time expensive watch owner could feel that way. In retrospect I think it's been one of the best purchases I have made for myself.

Upon reading the title, my first thought was, Heck no, my DJ41 is one of the three most comfortable watches I own! (The other two are a 1960-ish Bulova, which is a small and form-fitting hand-wound as you'd expect for the time, and an Casio F158A, which is also tiny. My other 18 or so watches are chunkier or have less forgiving bracelets.)

Then I read the detail. Seriously? No. The only watches I've got that get much attention are a starburst-green Swatch Sistem 51 with orange hands and that Casio - people really love the cheap $15 tiny Casio. Plus my watch is usually under cuffs.

I didn't buy my Rolex to impress anyone, and I don't wear it for them. I wouldn't wear it to volunteer at a homeless shelter, but I also wouldn't wear an expensive jacket or shoes then. I choose my watch, along with my shirt, shoes, etc., for the occasion.

Problems/mismanagement etc aren't my problem is increasingly my attitude. Most peoples cars are worth more than mine. Granted they're probably leasing it but it kinda evens things out on the who's a bigshot front.

No worries for me - if a Rolex is out of place, my Apple Watch can pick up the wrist role.

"Income groupings"? French cuffs? Guys fibbing to their Doctors about *not* owning a Rolex?!

Man, I bought my first AK because I really wanted the quality, history and YES, the 'veiled' prestige of owning a Rolex. That was 30+ years ago and times have changed but my motivation can't be *that* different than it is today. It rarely gets noticed, but when it does, I do get special thrill which I suspect many owners also experience. My candor might sound unusual, but I *like* owning a Rolex watch.

I agree with this. In certain roles the smallest things can matter. I work in a client facing environment and we charge them a lot for our services most often when they are in a time of need. If certain clients saw something flashy and expensive it would definitely give a bad impression and the business may suffer.

I also think its naive to think watches go unnoticed. Especially in meetings. thankfully, with Zoom meetings these issues have all but gone away now.
