Oyster Perpetual Automatic Winding Issue Or Just Me Not Knowing What I Am Doing?
Hello Folks
I seek some advice. I have a Oyster Perpetual 116000 Domino's Pizza award watch that was made at some point from 2013 to 2015. I have had issues with the watch stopping so I wanted to know if the watch is having an issue or if it is me. Here is the back story I bought this watch in July 2020 and it looked almost new. I came across an issue that the watch would stop after I took it off for the night. I would wear it all day and 4 hours after i took it off, it would stop. If I wound manually wound it 40 or so times and I left it on my night stand until it wound down then the watch would run at least 2 days. I wore it all weekend and when I took it off Sunday night, the watch had stopped 5 hours later. I put the watch on that Monday morning to leave to take my dad to a doc appt and I noticed the watch had stopped, when I checked the time while waiting for him to come out of the house. At that time I not able to set it, so I wore it unset and un wound. I drove an hour's drive round trip and the watch still did not start running. I then got home and swung my arm about 20 times and the watch still did not start running. In frustration I gave my wrist a good shake and then the watch started to run. This combined with a slight rattling noise when I gave the watch a light shake next to my ear (with bracelet off) convinced me to have it serviced. I was thinking that it was suffering the dreaded rotor axle issue. I opted to take it to the local jewelry store/ watch AD that I have done business with for years (I buy my GS, Seiko and Longines from them). They have an offsite watchmaker that worked at Rolex before he retired. They give a 2 year warranty so i am reassured. I opted for them because I know them and trust them and I really don't want to send things out of my state until Covid is done as who knows if the place I send the watch has to shut down for lockdown. Plus after Rolex RSC screwed up a past Rolex and it had to go back twice to fix it, I will not touch the RSC. I got it back on Weds and it looked great. The watchmaker told me that all it needed was a service (clean/oil/adjust/timing) and it would be good to go. He said the rotor axle looked fine. I did however have him replace it(at a small additional cost) as it is a weakness on this movement and Rolex replaces it as part of a service so it was worth it to replace it as who knows, 10 days later it might crap out. I did not get a chance to wind or set it as the place got the new Seiko LX Spring Drive and I wanted to play with them. I just put the watch on my wrist and that was that. The watch had not been running when I was handed it, but between the 25 mins I spent with the Seiko and Grand Seiko watches and the time it took me to get back to my car the watch had started to run. I never did get to set it but I wore it all day and it was running when I set it down to go to bed. it stopped some time that early morning. As I had not set it, I did not know when it exactly stopped. So I just left it alone until the actual time of day matched the time on the watch when it stopped (5:15), I gave it a couple of arm swings and a light shake and off it went. I wore it from 5:15pm onward. At 3:06 am, I noticed that the watch had stopped at 3:04am (2 mins before). I gave it a small shake and off it started to run. I then unscrewed the crown, set the time and wound it about 40 times and I shall see how it runs. My question is if I am wearing this watch right? The watch ran for almost 10 hours today after i gave it a slight shake and wore it. That should show that the auto wind is working. I do sit at a computer all day at work and lounged around from 7pm on. I am wondering if I am not active enough during the day. I notice that the 3 eta 2824 movement watches I have also seem to have a short power reserve after the watch was taken off. Two are new so I don't think they have an issue. However I wore my Seiko Samurai diver during the 2 1/2 weeks the watchmaker had it and all I did with that watch is to set it and then give it a shake and strap it on and it ran fine those 2 1/2 weeks on and off the wrist. Do Rolex watches with the 3130 or other 31xx movements take longer to auto wind then a Seiko with a 4R movement in it? Despite being fat and not really active, my Seiko Samurai kept ticking on or off the wrist yet my Swiss watches (Rolex and the eta watches) seems to stop. So is there a sign the watch(despite being serviced) still has a winding issue or is me being stupid for not going for a walk or being more active and thus the watch winds down. Or foes Seiko have a superior winding system? Any help you can give me on this is appreciated. |

Seiko's "magic-lever" autowinding system was more efficient than others when it came out in the 1960s. No idea if it still is, but wouldn't be surprised.
Wind your Rolex manually about 40 times and then wear it. A lot.

Wearing a watch does not wind any Rolex watch,as its wrist activity that make the winding pendulum swing to wind the mainspring. Before wearing give your watch a full manual wind thats 40 full crown turns clockwise only dont worry you cannot over-wind. As when mainspring is fully wound up it just slips in the spring-barrel. Now on a full manual wind with watch off wrist it should run between 39-48 hours give or take a hour or so either way.
