Rolex service

I sent my dads 16803 in to Rolex and these were the findings:

They want to replace the caseback 3000.00.

Also they wanted to replace hands and dial.

It keeps great time and it was there as a pin had fallen out of the bracelet. I also noticed that the dial was free spinning. So I figured it it needed a new spring tension thingy. (It didn’t click just around the world loose spinning) 😵*💫

Total cost 6k !

Granted my dad wears this thing. He works outside. It gets used.

Case backs are only a couple of hundred bucks.

They often recommend replacing dials and hands if the lume no longer glows, but it is often not the case that it is required.

Do you mean that the bezel spins freely? Yes, that is often the 2 dollar click spring that is missing or broken

Any Jeweler has stock ss rod that can pin the bracelet back together.

I think that I would seek a different estimate.

$6000 is steep … is this an estimate from a RSC (Rolex Service Center).

How is a case back $3k???? That doesn’t make a lick of sense to me.

Definitely would seek a second opinion.

Did you mean replacement case?

I looks worn on the lugs.

Check out an independent.

Gotta be a replacement case. Unless the case is somehow structurally unsound and won’t seal, i wouldn’t bother. I wouldn’t touch the dial or hands, i would send it for movement service only, maybe a new crystal if needed and you’re in for like $1250.

It could have been a case. The dial to me is fine. The hands have some grunge but I never noticed it. Rolex doesn’t offer a menu. It’s all or nothing. There is no charge to get it back and look for another opinion. The dark spots on the band are just dirt. Dad wore the thing so there is some dirt in there.

Well I will pick up the watch tomorrow. It looks like a click spring can run 250 for a genuine and 9 bucks and up for a non genuine. What experience do people have w aftermarket parts ?

There are some pros here possibly print the estimate from the Rolex service center and might clarify some of the questions. We have sent 3 or 4 back and they have always been reasonable. Tell Dad well done and well worn. Lots of years of enjoyment

I didn’t get alot back from pickup. Just that the work was denied. This seems more like my local AD paperwork than Rolex paperwork.

The case (not caseback) was 3k

Hands and dial were also recommended.

6k was the total.

I will go with a local repair. It is already off and I was told 10 or so days till I get it back. It needed a clean up. It was just dirty.

If there is more I’ll get back to it. I’ll post pictures of it complete.

If I decided to totally rework it at Rolex. New case ect. The way I figure it. I can do that anytime. For now I’ll keep it as 87 as I can.

Got it back from the independent… about 500 bucks.

Most of the markings on the smooth surfaces in these photos are fingerprints.

Could be. The click spring mechanism on that watch is very cheap and basic. It’s essentially a tiny piece of steel with a 90* angle that sits in a hole and runs against the inside of the bezel assembly. It should break in with time, if not, you can have any watch maker pop it off and fix it in 2 min.
