233 Dot vs AM/PM

Apart from the obvious cosmetic change does anyone know is there are any mechanical differences between the two ?

I have not heard many issues regarding the earlier 233s (apart from they take a bit more winding ?) so curious as to why the change.

Thanks

Steve

God knows why they changed it, people like Panerai with a nice clean dial, the dot was easy to use and didn't spoil the dial. The AM/PM isn't too great in my mind, what's the point of having a second hand on the sub-dial that uses the sub-dial as a 24 hour dial.

It's a waste of effort for me, there will have had to be minor tweaks to the movement to accomodate the AM/PM indicator and additional hand, but nothing more than that, if anything i'd think this would reduce the power of the watch?

It's the same as the IWC Big Pilot 5002 vs 5004. Don't know why they go change the design as 5002 is more true to its origins and it's much nicer IMO.

Prefer the Dot here...as I was thinking about pulling the trigger on the 270 but that am/pm indicator was just a tad too cluttered for me...

One day Panerai will tell us why they did this, adding the AM/PM just removes the basic princple of keeping the dial clean and easy to read

In my business we have a saying, 'keep it simple stupid', and that's what the dot was, it was like the sun, when it was white it was daytime, black was nighttime and it was easy to understand, so 4am would be black, 4pm would be white and everybody knew how to use it with ease and with just a glance.

Now we have the AM/PM, which adds an extra hand onto the subdial, you have to then look at it and work out where the little hands pointing as it uses the subdial like a 24 hour clock, then you look at the GMT hand to get the hour, it's not easy to quickly glance and work out the time and it's butt ugly

The am/pm indicator is not really that ugly.. The bad thing is it makes the whole dial cluttered. And most of us would agree that Panerai is all about simplicity so having that just takes off that origin of Panerai. I would love the 233 to have the number "9" and smaller sub seconds dial. That would really make it perfect IMO.

Again i'm not a fan of the smaller subdials, that's more a radiomir thing, if you like that configuration then the 312 has the smaller radiomir style subdial.

It's in the 2009 catalogue, when they're released later this year they will have the AM/PM indicator, and cost £8400.

I've only seen it in pictures, it's not really something i'm a fan off, the AM/PM thing was what put me off the 270, and i had the chance of a BNIB 270 but just couldn't get over the cluttered dial and that 9 that seems to be forced onto the dial

It seems that you are right on this . Panerai=Simple. So anything complicated just don't do it for Panerai. That is why I love 233 in the first place and now I love the 312 too.
