WTS: Chopard L.U.C GMT 16/1867

Price: USD 13,950

Description

This is the Chopard L.U.C GMT reference 16/1687. The Chopard L.U.C, which are the initials of founder Louis-Ulysse-Chopard, is a calibre that was once among the most underrated in horology. More known as a jewellery house, Chopard was largely overlooked as a serious watchmaker. Given that there was a point in time where their most recognizable watch is likely the Happy Diamonds, it’s safe to say that they were not looked at as a watchmaking powerhouse.

After three years of work with Michel Parmigiani, Chopard developed their in-house Cal. 96.10 that debuted in 1996. This helped the brand gain respectability as a watch powerhouse for those in the know. Truth be told, there are plenty of in-house movements in the modern day that disguise third-party movements as their own, and are hence overrated. These are mostly owned by conglomerates. But Chopard is independent and takes their movements seriously. The importance of this movement cannot be understated during a period of recovery from the Quartz crisis where most companies relied on a modified version of third party movements.

The aforementioned GMT is powered by the Cal 4.96, which was a functional derivative of the Cal 96.10. While the 4.96 is less of a movement than the 1.96 without a Geneva seal, swan-neck regulator or a precious metal rotor, it is no slouch with comparable finishing and increased water resistance as well as being chronometer certified. The guilloche pattern, while stamped, is still present on the dial with an added GMT function. While Chopards equipped with the cal 1.96 have increased in both price and popularity in recent times, the 1867 GMT remains a viable alternative at a lower price point.

Condition

This Chopard 1867 GMT is in good pre-owned condition. There are some hairline scratches on the white gold case, noticeably on the bezel with no dings or dents on the case. The caseback remains in excellent condition with engravings still sharp and no flaws on both front and back crystal. The watch retains its original box, warranty card, manual and original purchase receipt alongside the original strap and buckle and is in full working order.
