Review of the Patek Perpetual 5940

Hello all,

Just wanted to post my review of the Patek 5940, and why I think it really is a great buy right now! (I know Subtona will agree!)

Let me know what you think!

Thank you.

Comprehensive & thoughtful and most importantly enjoyable read. Well done.

I’ll add my experience.

I originally owned the black dial. Surprisingly easy to read, the leaf hands are curved just right to catch a tiny bit of light in low light conditions. The black dial was a bit more formal and limiting as far as strap options than the white. It also has some additional details that separate it from the white. The subdials are framed with a silver ring (this is the only dial of the 4 that has this detail). The 27 in the date is shrunken for space restrictions where the white dial has the date numerals at almost the same size.

The one small quibble I had with the black dial was the white hands of the sub dials. Their finishing was very rough along the sides when viewed with a macro lens.

Fully agree it wears larger than its dimension would indicate. My wrist is 7.5” around and it never feels small.

My personal opinion is it improves on the 3940 and the 21mm lug spacing adds just that extra bit of presence on the wrist vs the 18mm spacing of the 3940.

Thanks for writing this and highlighting imho one of the finest watches in the patek catalog.

One question I always wondered about was why didn’t they release a platinum version.

Ps here is a pic along side a friends 3940.

Pps also agree with you the numerals on the subdials, they could have gone with a simpler less distracting font. But it’s a minor detail.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I knew you would have some great input!

Yep, I've always wondered the same about the platinum- not sure why they left it at the three golds. Interesting to know about the silver ring around the subdials in the black version too- that had slipped me by!

Adding a pic of the black dial that shows the subdial rings more clearly

I agree with you the basic finishing of the hands should look great under magnification on a watch at this price point.
