Movie hype....objective or subjective?

We watched, 'The Banshees of Inisherin' the other evening, one or two reviews said 'it was as good as, 'In Bruge'.
It was an interesting, if a little depressing experience. Two fine, Irish actors, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, telling a story about life on a little island off Ireland, around the time of the Irish Civil War.

It's worth watching, but in my humble opinion, nowhere near as good as, In Bruge.

Anyone here seen it, what did you make of it?

Colin Farrell has always been one of favorite actors

I have watched both these movies more than three times, I absolutely loved In Bruges and thought Banshees of Inisherin was a fantastic film. In fact, I may have liked it more and have recommended it to many friends. Admittedly, it has a lot to do with the way I watch movies as well as my own interests.

I would say that movie hype (or lack thereof) is most certainly subjective: there has been more than a few movies with wonderful reviews that I did not care for or simply disliked and quite possibly as many I loved despite what others had to say about them.

I thought Banshees of Inisherin was excellent and underrated. In Bruges was also very good.

We watched Jaws last night with our daughter who’s 20 and wanted to see a cult classic…

I forgot how bad it was

I guess maybe back in the day it was ok, but to me, this movie doesn’t hold up very well.

Perhaps, you’ve been spoiled by CGI, Brian. I suspect we all have.

The further you go back in cinematic history, the worse the ‘animatronics’ can look.
Have you ever seen the 1963 version of Jason and the Argonauts?....don’t laugh, they were trying their best, with what they had.


Personally, I have always enjoyed, the original JAWS, despite the rigid great white🤪. (not so, the sequels.)
Good movie or not, the apparently devastating effect, the film had on the reputation of sharks was not good.

In 1975 I waited for 3 hours with my cousin in Chicago to see it.

Bruce the Shark has become an afterthought in 2025 but he was cutting edge in 1975!

I think Jaws is a masterpiece !!

Colin Farrell is one of my favorite actors. Although it was not highly Acclaimed, I thought he did an excellent Sonny Crocket in the Miami Vice movie.

I am a fan of both actors, and I think work very well together.

I must say that I enjoyed In Bruges considerably more than The Banshees of Inisherin, though at this point I can't tell you why.
Perhaps I should go back and watch Banshees again.

I would recommend 7 Psychopaths and The Gentlemen as excellent movies and fun roles for Colin.

Yes! I really liked it as well

It was a great IMO. I am a sucker for Michael Mann movies in general though.

Many times. As a kid, I'd watch it whenever it was on TV. Even with what they had, Medusa was still terrifying.

I gotta say Brian, I really enjoy Jaws every time I re-watch it. You need to consider that like DePalma, Spielberg was able to develop tension and suspense without ever showing the shark (like DePalma did in the chainsaw scene of Scarface). The beauty of Jaws is the characters, their interactions and reactions.

Now, In Bruges, I'm still not sure why, but I just couldn't get into it. I've tried a few times but can't get much more than 30 minutes into it before I give up.

"The Banshees" was a good show, but I completely agree that it was a bit depressing. Excellent acting but I was really hoping for a different ending.

Agree, I’m quite partial, to a happy ending m’self.


It’s a Wonder Life, The Quiet Man…..High Noon??

We watched Paper Moon, the other evening, a wonderful movie,
with (spoiler alert) a sweet happy ending.

Fave, genuine, happy endings folks…….Day of The Jackal, doesn’t count!

The version of, Scarface I saw, definitely didn’t ‘hide the shark’ in the chainsaw in the shower scene, blood and brain spray everywhere!

YES, but you never actually see the chainsaw cutting any body parts, was my point.

Here's my 'Scarface' story.

Years ago when it first came out, went to see it with some friends. Didn't like it at all, but to be honest, I knew going in I probably wasn't going to. It really wasn't my kind of film, but my buddies wanted to see it so I went. Then the next week, went to visit a friend and his wife out of town. He hadn't seen the movie and really wanted to, so when he brought up going I didn't mention I had already seen it (let alone that I didn't like it and was pretty sure his wife wasn't going to like it either) so the three of us went. When the 'chainsaw' scene happened, he leaned over to me and said, "Would you mind if we left? I didn't think it was going to be like this." I said, "Not at all." And the three of us, (along with a few other people in the theatre) made for the exit. When we got outside, he kept apologizing for making me leave the movie early so I came clean and told him I had seen it the week before and was more than happy to leave.
