Ever talk to someone who doesnt know what they have?

Was at a deposition yesterday and the whole time while I was asking the plaintiff questions I was starring at his lawyer's watch. After the depo ended, I shoke hands with the Lawyer and I said "Hey nice, Sea Dweller, I love that watch....want to trade it for my Explorer" and I pointed to my wrist.

He goes "oh thats a nice one" to which I reply "Yeah I like it, its a good dress watch but I am looking into getting a Sea-Dweller, Deep Sea or Submariner." He had nothing to say to this as he looked at me as if I were speaking Chinese. He just looked at me and went "uh huh."

Since I am an asshole I proceeded with "yeah I dont really like cyclops on watches so thats why I'd get the Sea Dweller or 14060 Submariner and not the 16610 and definitely not the 16613 cause I dont like Two-Tone if you know what I mean"

Blank stare again and he goes "yeah, makes sense...well I will see you in two weeks"


So has this ever happened to you? Try to start talking watches with someone who has a nice watch and has no idea what they have.

Yup- You usually can tell by the response you get when you compliment them on their watch....I find it best to end it- if they're not responding in a WIS way... "Well, nice watch..." rather than try and press the issue...

Been there, learned that, though I did not go as in depth as you did. Now I only talk watches with people who I know are WIS. Saves me from the blank stares and uncomfortable silences.

I think what a lot of the WIS-types tend to forget is that most people buy a watch because they think it looks cool (or they think other people will think it looks cool on them). While they may know they are wearing a Rolex, they more than likely don't know or care what model # it is, what years the serial number they have span, when the first one was introduced, etc. That's why I never go into that kind of detail unless they respond in kind. Otherwise, I would feel as though I'm coming off as an elitist know-it-all.

that is so funny you said that because all the time that happens to me... i talk to people who are wearing a rolex yet they know nothing about rolex's or their own watch... they just think its a watch that say's rolex and it doesn't have anything else to it then that! it drives me crazy... i remember back when i knew nothing about rolex's... i was 8 years old..

i remember maybe back 6 months or so ago, i told my drink rep, "hey nice submariner" he looks around then he looks down at his wrist and says "thanks, but it's not a submariner it's a rolex"

i'm no rolex officianado either, but i know some. model numbers..not so much. i'm sure only a small percentage of people who wear rollies are not as intuitive as the people in this forum.

Do you actually think everyone with a Rolex is a nut about watches as you are? I never talk about watches unless I know the person is a Wis like myself, otherwise they think I'm nuts. Wow, maybe their right.

I am learning more and more everyday...I like when people compliment me on my Rolexes but I wouldn't want to be ridiculed for not knowing production years, case numbers, movements etc.

The same way not every person driving a Corvette knows the engine block codes, LT1 vs. LT2 etc.

A discussion with a WIS is one thing but trying to "show off" is another - and if I were put in that spot, I would just say "thanks, I don't know all the history and technical specs of my Rolexes, I am too busy at work (when not typing on here! lol) making more money to keep buying them - because I can!"

Besides, who, other than a true WIS or an a** says "hey, nice k serial 16610 late model, pre 1978 but no later than fall of 1980, possibly purchased in the southern part of the US Submariner"?!

That being said, you should know a "date just" from a "Rolex"... using my analogy, nobody says to a Corvette owner "nice Corvette", "oh, thanks, it's a Chevrolet".

Now back to work, I have my eye on my next Rolex!

Some people wear a watch because it tells time and also functions as a piece of jewelry....

My psychiatrist's office

I am being treated for OCD and visit my therapist once a week.
A few weeks ago, I was in the waiting room and a man sat down next to me. After a few seconds, he started asking me about my watch. He just went on and on and on about every detail.

I asked him, "Are you in the watch business?"

He answered, "No. I just like watches. Do you own any other watches?"

I own several, but I answered, "No."

I sat there for 30 minutes listening to the guy talk about watches. It was kinda scary.

I feel naked without a watch.

I own 14 but have never purchased a watch. My favorites are a Hamilton (from the 40's), a Croton (from the 30's), a Bulova (60's) and a self-winding Timex (50's) all inherited from grandfathers and great-grandfathers or received as gifts. I also notice others' watches and have had some interesting conversations when I've commented on them.

A fellow in my office has a Submariner..for like 5 years.. He didn't know you could wind it? Says he was going to get rid of it cause it never held a charge.. LOL
