1970 - the 40 year old GMT-Master 1675 & me

A couple GMT threads today and I wanted to share my story.

The GMT-Master is the watch that I most identify with Rolex. A few vintage GMTs have passed through my hands over the past couple years and I had been on the look-out for one dating to 1970. This past winter one turned up here in town. The owner was a very nice gentleman and had it serviced regularly. Unfortunately, it had been heavily polished and the lugs were visibly worn. I took it out occasionally, but the lugs bothered me.

After talking to my local Rolex AD watchmaker about it, I decided to send it back to Rolex NY for a full service; new case and Jubilee bracelet. It was completed this past last month but I wasn't sure I should 'make it my own'. I offered it here on TRF for a little under my investment and let it sit in the box for the month.

Well, I celebrated my 40th birthday in May. It's been a great month so today I pulled the stickers off and size the bracelet to treat myself to a belated b-day present. While it's lost it's original serial (47xx.. replacement case), it feels like a milestone to celebrate and I like the idea of this GMT being 'reborn' new case and all.

Keeping with the theme - a local WIS / auto_enthusiast_extraordinaire told me about a 1970 BMW coupe in his neighborhood that might be available. A few weeks' back and forth with the friend and owner and I was able to pick it up earlier this week. The engine is apart but I sent the cylinder-head off to my machinist Tuesday and I expect to have it back on the road in June. The month's truly been great and I'm cautiously optimistic about my 40's!

The case is listed as 'Case Frame-1675-0 S/St' and the price is $570.

Adam i was born May of 1970 also. Foolishly I had a 2nd quarter of 1970 MINT GMT pass through my hands during the boom and wish I would have kept it.Enjoy the car and the watch.

I think you would have been really disappointed down the road if you had sold that.

Thanks for the wishes and input. Yes, happy with the decision to keep the GMT and enjoying the 2800CS project.
