Buffing to mint condition

Recently I've seen a 2001 white faced daytona in a preowned shop selling at $12,000 SGD. However, when the watch was put to a closer look, there were so many scratch marks all over the watch and bracelet (both polished and matt surfaces). Was really puzzled how could the owner "ill-treated" such a wonderful watch that cost so much?

The dealer was saying that if i'm interested, the scratches could be buffed off to 100% mint condition. Was really wondering is it worth purchasing it? Could the watch be really refurbished to it's original condition? Need some advise on whether to buy or not.

Just over £4000 not a bad price,and I have seen some quite remakable results from a RSC.Now as long as scratches are not very deep, and all the watches edges are quite sharp should not be a problem getting it back to a like new state.But even if the watch was buffed and refurbished if you was not happy with result you could still walk away,and ask if they would do a service at the same time.

once saw a watch badly scratched, my friend brought it to a 2nd hand watch shop and the scratches were all buff out so you can't tell there were scratches before

Hi Eric and welcome;

As Padi said the RSCs can do some remarkable things but remember that they have the equipment and the experience. Be sure the dealer knows what he's doing or he could really make those scratches much worse.

I suggest you NOT pay him for the watch until after he polishes it to your satisfaction. Don't expect perfection but, if qualified he should be able to do a very good job.

Will ask if the dealer if they could restore them to mint condition before committing the money. Btw any idea how long will RSC take to refurbish the watch and what are the charges?

Well Eric its how busy the RSC is,now see you are in Singapore.Now a few years back they done a complete service for me in less than 2 weeks,cannot remember the exact charge now.But if your dealer wants to sell the watch he should, IMO get it done all in with the price of watch

ask the dealer to do it for free, if you're paying him 12k i'm sure he would be able to think of something unless he doesn't want the commission.
