42MM GMT, Is it really so far-fetched?

Ok, we can all blame Otto for starting this rumor... (the Bastid! ) And Bill (Speedy) is probably right that it's a bunch of But let's look at it with an open mind.

The 42 MM suprised everyone at Basil, Rolex already had a 40MM EXP II, AND a 39, yet they come out with a new size. Rolex already has a 40MM GMT, why is it so far-fetched to believe they would release a 42? The Old EX II and GMT shared the same movement, the 3186, they can also share the 3187 if a 42 MM GMT is released. And can't the GMT and EXP II use the same case? Isn't the only difference the (rotating) bezel?

Granted, I don't know about the AG and TT models.... But is it really such a stretch to think they couldn't come out with a 42 GMT?

I think it's too soon to do such an upgrade Paul. The GMT2C is still pretty new in relationship to the Explorer series. The current GMT has the newer case and really led the way for the Sub to follow. The only update I see for a while is maybe to the clasp.

Agree with Dalip. I'm guessing it'll be many years before Rolex tinkers with the GMT IIc, if ever.

it's very possible giving the recent introduction of bigger sized watches (day-date ii, datejust ii, 39mm explorer, and now the 42mm explorer 2). however, i highly doubt rolex is going to update the gmt2c anytime soon. perhaps in 40 years?

I believe the change in case sizes in the Explorer range was to make them more saleable. The biggest problems that the old Explorer and Explorer II faced was conflict with similar models - the 36mm Explorer had to compete with the 36mm Oyster Perpetual, a watch that was cheaper, yet had the improved bracelet, whilst the 40mm Explorer II was always in the shadow of the 16710. The new models stand out - there's nothing directly comparable to them now. It would be a bit silly to introduce a GMT in the 42mm case size, as it'll be the same problem again - too much conflict. A very clever move from Rolex, if you ask me

I think it's way too early for them to come out with a new 42mm GMT. Maybe in three years or so but Rolex is not the type to come out with changes like that so fast... Just my 2 cents!

I know you were exaggerating, but of all the sport models coming to mind, the GMT has had more upheaval and change than most if not all the others. While unlikely, a major change within the next 5 years would not be without precedent.

I have no idea if they will or won't, but consider rather quick changes (by Rolex standards) are not unknown.

As an example the 16760 only lasted a few years before the advent of the 16710.

Early divers went through a bunch of changes as they evolved.

You never know.

The 42mm GMT is called the Explorer II. I love that watch.

I don't see it happening as the GMT II wears larger then its 40mm size.

I honestly believe that they won't change the size of the GMT but they will release it with the ceracrom Pepsi and Coke bezels in the next couple of years!

makes sense to me... with the GMTIIC I only wish they upgrade the Lume and it would be perfect.

Seems to me Rolex have moved away from a standard core spec for their sports models and are comfortable with minor variations in size/shape/hand size within the range.

The last release but one, prior to the Exp II, was the sub date 11610 which has a smaller dimension case. In short I don't see them standardising the range around the new size Exp II.
