..do you think the vintage forum would be as huge as now? Afterall, aren't most of us in this vintage forum for the matte dials? I personally think WG indices/glossy dials are the worst part of a modern rolex watch.

I think on top if the Matt dial, what really make us crazy about these vintage beauties are the patina, faded aluminium bezel, lug hole... I have come back to Rolex after many years moved to other brand. And I love the Rolex particular the vintage.

I do understand the question, but keep in mind there was a time in the vintage world where gloss dials were the norm. Albiet sans WG surrounds.

I agree with the OP!

Give me a new 116610 with a matte dial and painted markers. Make the lume on the dial and hands vintage style with "patina" and make the "SUBMARINER" text RED.

Oh yeah, as long as I'm dreaming, how about a big chunky "superdome" crystal in sapphire. All it would need is a nice NATO strap. . . Drool.

However, I might add the following:

I got myself a Speedy Pro 10 years ago. It took me 9 years and 6 months until I got myself a vintage cal 321 Speedy Prol. The Speedy kept me pleased.

Got my 14060m 9 years ago. 1 year later I had a 5513. By now I've been through 6 or 7 vintage Subs. Why? Because they have matte dials and plexi. And the mystique.

If the 14060m had had plexi and a matte dial, I think it would have kept me happy a lot longer, like the Speedy has done. Ok, there's still the alluring mystique but matte+plexi go a long way.

Personally my favorites are plexi + glossy raised index dials with tritium. It is the most visually interesting.

matte dials are exceptional

plexi is hot (not sure if i could do it for a daily wearer, i don't like scratched crystals)

definitely like the original indices with no surrounds, i have also grown to like the white gold surrounds, they match the hands.

and lugholes are just
