Golf with a Rolex on - Does it harm the watch ?

Soon I am playing corporate golf in the afternoon after a big morning presentation. First time playing since getting my DJ in October. If I wear my Rolex from the presentation to the golf does it harm the watch? If so I'll bring a 2nd watch to wear on the course but will have to sacrifice style points.

Not trying to poll about agreeing or not to wear a watch while playing. I've always played that way and play to a 12 handicap.

Looking forward to opinions !

Hmmm....only one good golfer wears a Rolex when playing.

Another master post from Gunter.

Wear your Rolex DDjon and have a great round.

If you hit your Rolex with your golf club after a terrible hook or slice, yes, you will harm your Rolex.

I always play with a watch on and have never harmed the watch. I now wear a Garmin GPS on my wrist which gives me the time and yardage.

The only thing is dirt and sand ,if you hit out of a bunker, will get on the watch. Just make sure to give it a quick rinse after your round. A friend of mine at our club wears his all the time (Explorer) and doesn't clean it ever. It looks like he dug it out of the ground and put it on his wrist!

from Watchbuys' website FAQ

"Our recommendation is no, although the risk to a manually winding mechanical watch is less than the risk to an automatically winding mechanical watch because of the rotor.

Any activity which causes a sudden, violent and accelerated motion to a mechanical watch should be considered carefully. This includes golf, tennis, chopping wood, baseball or other similar activities, and again the risk is greater to watches with rotors.

We often hear "I play golf with my mechanical watch and have had no problems". While this may be true, we and many others feel that the potential to damage the movement and/or rotor from sudden shock is too great to risk these activities, and our advice is to remove the watch."

And on Showering with your watch

Our recommendation to this question is no.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Mechanical watches are water resistant, and not water proof. This means that they have been tested to their rated depth using water testing machines, but they are not guaranteed to never leak.

2. Showering presents challenges to mechanical watches other than just water. These include the effects of soap, shampoo or other cleaning agents which may over time weaken the effect of the seals.

3. The strap may be damaged by exposure to water.

4. The spray from a shower head if aimed in certain directions on a mechanical watch can simulate water depths beyond the rating of the watch.

These excerpts from TimeZone may help:

"A shower presents additional difficulties - soap lowers surface tension, and warm water has lower surface tension as well. Add to the fact that a shower can sometimes have powerful jets"

"Here's why you shouldn't wear any watch in the shower. Inside a water resistant watch is air. Air contains water vapor. If you sit in a hot tub, or sauna, or take a long hot shower you heat up the air inside the watch. Like that shiny sapphire crystal on your watch? Sapphire is a fine conductor of temperature. Ever leave a movie theater on a muggy August day, you walk outside and your glasses fog up? Same thing can happen to your watch when you exit the shower/sauna/hot tub and go into a cold room. I get clients saying 'water got in my watch from the shower when in reality it's condensation on the underside of the crystal."

But then again they are not selling Rolexes.
They only deal with really nice german watches.

That's why the watch gods made Casio watches.......better for sport, lightweight, G-Shock-proof!

Seems odd not to take the advice of those with thousands and thousands of posts...but instead listen to those with a relative handful. Sounds like you had your mind made up when you asked.

It's your watch...treat it however you want!

Good luck out there on the links!

I re-read: Replies 'no' were direct to my question as posed - 'no' means 'no doesn't hurt the watch' - I was reading 'no, don't wear it'

I needed my morning coffee !

I don't know the answer to your question, but why take a chance? I strap on a G-Shock when I tee off. It's lighter and more comfortable than a ss mechanical watch, and there'll be no regrets in the event it gets damaged.

I have a small pouch that I put my Rolex into and put it in my pocket, once I finish I put it back on my wrist.

With my massive swing speed I doubt the movement would survive past the first par 5.

I never take mine off. Golfing, chopping wood, shooting courses, snowboarding, wake boarding, light construction, swimming, running.

I'm confident that nothing will happen to my watch. If it does I'll just get it repaired.

These watches have been to hell in back with all the r&d rolex does...at the highest elevations, lowest depths of the sea, boiled, frozen......and guess what, after all that they still work flawlessly. then we see people saying not to shower with it. Give me a break. Every rolex was made to outlast the person that bought it, to me that's part of what makes rolex stand out and the main reason i wanted it. For this $ i wanted something i could wear everywhere i go all the time and not worry about it. If you are comfortable wearing something that heavy while you play golf go for it. the watch is laughing thinking it is the one that will hurt you and your golf game not the other way around. If watches could laugh that is. You'd have to swing hard enough to tear something before it's fast enough to hurt the watch.
Trust your rolex was built for anything you can throw at it. Wear it and enjoy.

Many years back, I was shooting a 12 gauge, sawed off shotgun wearing my 16710 GMT Pepsi... there was quiet a kick, & my Rolex was just fine... I can't see golf being worse...

The way I golf, I would be scared that I would mess up the movement. I take some real diggers sometimes and the sudden jarring certainly couldn't be good for a Rolex! I keep mine in my handy dandy little side pocket in my golf bag and put it back on once I drain my last putt of the day. I like having my watch on at the 19th hole. Chill
