Daytona thought!

I have been seeing over the past while a huge increase in Daytona owners and kept wondering.. How many of you on a daily basis use the chrono functions? Also how many of you use the large timer hand as a second hand?

So come on all you proud daytona owners, spill the beans

I have had mine less than a week and am using the larger second hand. To be honest, probably will never use or need the other functions.

Thanks for the honest answer. I remember when I had a chrongraph years ago (sadly not daytona!) I never used it's functions, just liked looking at all the dials!
Does using the bigger hand as a second hand in any way wear the watch out faster?

i just love the "look" of chrono's and view them as a dial embellishment much like others may choose a dial with diamonds, guess any function not actually used by its wearer is an embellishment wether a physical or psychological one[SD's impressive dive rating!!]

Yes, without the chronograph running, and the watch fully wound, the power reserve of the Cal. 4130 movt. is 72 hours.

With the chronograph on continously, the power reserve is 66 hours.

I for my part use the chronograph on an occasional basis, but to be honest the ONLY thing I find a bit annoying about the Daytona are the screw-down pushers since you cannot time anything immediately without unscrewing the chronograph buttons

So, the power reserve is less, but does that mean the watch wears out faster?

i dont use the chronograph function much... and i never use the large second hand without a reason..

My GMT is my Daily watch so the Daytona only makes cameo appearances. Usually at weekends. I have never actually used the Chrono. function for anything... apart from playing of course :)

I probably will start wearing it soon! The original plan was to put it up for my son but he is only 9 months old!!!!! I thought about it and there is no reason I cant enjoy it now so I will start wearing it soon. I just love my GMT-c too much to take it off right now!!

Oh, and I would also not leave the CHRONO hand running continously out of two reasons:

1) Why expose the movt. to excessive wear?

2) Some FAKE Daytonas (the REALLY bad ones!) are among other things recognised by having the "CHRONO" hand running continously since it in fact acts as the continously running second's hand (for the "main watch"). So if you do not want to have people seeing your watch thinking "Ah, it's a fake!", better not have the chrono hand running continously.

Thanks Bo, so running the big hand does increase wear, I thought so but was not sure. An interesting connection with the fake thing as well!
I am sure glad about the way the responses are going as I must admit all I got mine for at the time was that it looked good! Maybe it is my eyesight getting worse as I get older but I now like a dial to be as simple as possible, I think that is why I like the Millgaus!

By nature it would mean MORE wear to have the chronograph running continously than just using it "normally" to time things when you NEED to time something.

Having said that, the information that the power reserve is 66 hours when the chronograph is continously engaged does seems to point to the circumstance that it does not HARM the watch as such (but would just mean that you should keep in mind that it would mean more wear to the parts, resulting in more frequent service intervals).

I'm a big fan of Chronographs. I use the function a couple of times a week. I will use the Daytona chrono fn. too. I time drives, simulation runs at work, etc......mostly for fun.

I hardly ever use the chronograph, and when I do it’s usually for stupid things. Like to see how long it takes me to pee, how long a flight is, how long it takes my wife to get ready. Probably not the things that Rolex was thinking when they created this GORGEOUS piece

Poor man's Daytona here. But yes, I use the chrono functions all the time for both work and leisure.
Just last week my wife and I decided to make the "Sunday gravy" [that's spaghetti sauce for you non Italians]. After all the ingredients were added I used the chrono to time the 2 hour simmer and the bezel to time the 15 minute stir cycle.
And I'm never late for dinner!

If I may interject as an owner of a fairly similar watch -- VC Overseas.

The screw-down pushers are a slight pain.

About the only I use mine for is grilling, etc. Steaks on the grill, gabbing with friends and beer flowing, it's nice to have a timer running. Same for watching the ball game and cooking up pasta etc, that gets messed up if overcooked.

For running etc, I use a digital chrono.

The Daytona just looks great have those dials.

Yes it is. In fact it's featured in the Daytona advertisment.

Yes, it is said to be on the "Top Ten List" of the best chronograph movements EVER made. And that is quite something!

Yes, the new Daytona movt. Cal. 4130 has the "Parachrom bleu" hairspring inside, but in early reviews (like from 2000 where the new Daytona movt. was introduced) there is NO mentioning of the PB hairspring, but my guess is it was there from start on. Anyway, on the OFFICIAL Rolex website (www.rolex.com) the PB hairspring is specifically mentioned in the description of the movement of the new Daytona.

Here is an example of an early review of the new Daytona (PB hairspring not mentioned, but "BREGUET".):

Anyway, as stated, in the above review "Breguet" is mentioned as hairspring, but the PB hairspring is also often described as a "Breguet OVERCOIL" hairspring. So maybe it is just a matter of what term you use.

Oh, yes, it was!

As I state, I believe it is a matter of terms.

I use my Daytona to time myself in my Ferrari Daytona as I race at the Daytona Speedway before returning home to my house in Daytona Beach! Daytona daytona daytona I just love everything Daytona....my dog is also called daytona,,,hoooray!
