Nicknames for Rolex Models: what do you think?

Batman...Hulk.....Beast....Bluesy....

Personally I cringe a bit whenever I see these used.

Am I alone in this?

Tell me what you think...

Two-tone Bluesy, ExpyII, TOG...

Smurf, Sub...

Yep, works for me, n'at.

I suppose if a nickname develops organically it's OK. The President in reference to the DD doesn't bother me because there is some history behind it.

But I had to laugh at all the "What should we call the new GMT?" threads. Guys actually posting their pet name with supporting reasons to call it the Batman, Bruiser, Powerade... Amusing that there was real debate going on about this, like there was pressure to get it right because this new nickname will be our eternal gift to the watch world.

Another vote for this one.

Nicknames are fun as well as sensible for WIS. It is all part of 'the obsession' and forms the wider 'folklore' of the Rolex part of the watch hobby.

Batman, Bruiser and Powerade are starting to get a bit silly however.

I voted "juvenile..." but Mike's post better describe my feeling about nicknames.

Not voting because neither one really work for me.

But I do like the names. I think they are fun.

Not necessarily cool or awesome, but fun.

I like them but only if they are universally accepted. The new bi-color ceramic GMT I feel doesn't have a consensus yet, and I personally dislike Batman.

TOG is an acronym. (Turn-O-Graph) Nicknames are fine, I suppose, but I don't use them.

Not a fan but don't mind the Submariner being called a Sub or the GMT's being called Pepsi or Coke.

Rubbish is probably a little strong for my choice, but I don't care for nicknames that are created in an effort just to be cute or clever. For me, names like Pepsi or Coke were pretty clear attempts to describe a specific model. Others that I find unobjectionable are simple shortenings of names.

I generally use the proper name, I hate the new Gmt's nicknames. If it has to have one or will find one in a few years on it own in its own time.

Nicknames only work and have charm when they come about in an organic fashion - it's not something that can be forced, and certainly, working to 'think of a nickname' is a good example of how to short-change the process of arriving at a nickname.

Sub, DD, DJ, Root Beer, Coke, Pepsi, Daytona, and even AK and OP are easy to use diminutives for the watches' real names and reference numbers when everyone is clear on what watch is being discussed.

Bluesy, Expy, and Milly don't work so well, in my opinion.

Rollie makes me want to commit a violent act.

I agree with the organic process. A good nickname should just emerge over time and gain acceptance and currency.

Anything that's less will seem contrived.

I agree with Grady.

I hate the silly nicknames. Batman is the worst. When the BLNR came out, everyone was more concerned with being the one who named it instead of talking about the watch itself.

I didn't vote, neither choice really fits for me either. I don't mind some ie. Hulk, Smurf, etc. But for some reason, when I read "rollie" I cringe....I absolutely hate that one.

Batman is an incredible name. And since we have such a large number of members in favor of this great name, I'm on board. Just to make sure we have all agreed on the 'best' name for all of WIS-dom, though, I want to propose a few that I think are just as worthy for consideration.

There's this classic. Sorry I can't claim this idea as mine. I believe some fine member already suggested it.

And we have this beaut. Get it? Engineering, Rolex, watch technology?

One of my favs. And for full disclosure, I think this has a slight edge over Batman. I'm thinking we call the new watch the 'Cleaner.' Although 'Laundie' works, too.

And to maintain our beverage theme. Because, well, why not?

And lastly, for those that consume too much beverage.

Choose wisely, my friends.
