Several years ago I was looking to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and I wanted to start a tradition for myself - get a Rolex, wear it on all of my adventures and engrave each event on the caseback. But what to get?

Well, I was thinking that there are glaciers at the summit of Kili so a white dial watch would be good. I would need a good amount of surface area on the back because I knew I would be traveling quite a bit and Daytonas have the biggest area for engraving (plus I love chronos) so a white dial 16520 made immediate sense.

Fourteen expeditions later (including several mountains, deserts, oceans, glaciers and even a stint in the military), the back of my trusty Daytona is filled. This watch is worth 100 times the market value to me now.

But, I'm not done yet! I have so much more I want to do so now I need another Rolex...

The 16570 Polar Explorer was the logical choice. It is the perfect compliment to my Daytona and, as I mentioned in the opening post of this thread, it truly embodies what Rolex means to me - exploration and pushing one's limits in life.

Time to gear up for more adventures!!!

Finally getting the respect it deserves!
The one I'm giving my son (at college graduation) is engraved. I let him wear it when we went to Philmont Scout Ranch when he was 14. It has his initials, Mt. Phillips, elevation and date, to copy the above ad, though a much more modest accomplishment. Still, not bad for a 14 year old to hike 10 days to about 12,000 feet carrying a 40 pound pack.

I really wish the 16550 and 16570 had carried over the orange 24hr hand.

Is that why it's called the Polar? I always thought it was because of its white face. I have no experience in any kind of snow at all but I would have thought that in white out conditions a black faced watch would be easier to read. But this accomplished gentleman obviously knows what he's doing and I am happy to know one of my favorite timepieces is not just a looker but a very capable tool indeed.

Enjoying mine with a cold one

You are correct, it is because of the white face. Several years ago, we had a debate over what to call the white-faced EXP II. Other watches had nicknames: Paul Newman, Kermit, etc. Someone, I don't recall who, started a thread to name it. Someone, again, it escapes me who, came up with Polar. It stuck. I agree about the white dial/snow/ contrast. But I did notice one of Team USA's Snowboard coaches wearing one the other night. Some of the mods or other old guys here may recall the thread for you. Too much since to search!
