Do you Comment/Compliment Another Person Who is Also Wearing a Rolex?

This may be a weird question...but I was instructing a barrister last week and noticed that she was wearing a Datejust.

I was very tempted to compliment her on the watch (e.g. "nice watch"), but did not end up going through with it because I thought it would be awkward and inappropriate.

Just wondering, do you generally comment/compliment another person who is also wearing a Rolex? Is it awkward in the sense that the comment inevitably invites them to look down at your wrist to see the same?

Sometimes, depends on situation.
I've actually received a few comments in the past couple months. More than usual.

No, I leave other people and their watches alone unless I am already speaking to them for another reason.

Only if we are talking about something else or if its a true WIS piece. By that I mean like a vintage piece or something really cool like that.

But usually the vast majority of rolex owners dont give a damn about the watch, and they probably dont remember the reference number if you asked them.

They bought it because its either a Rolex, they liked the look, or its blingy enough for them to make a statement.

Not to get roasted but that is my experience. Us WIS are a VERY limited bunch.

Guy bought a 30k skydweller from me at my house and said, "this is like a sub right?"

HOWEVER

I comment often on Pateks, AP and VC or niche brands like that. I get very good response.

Depends on the circumstances. At dinner a couple of nights ago, a gentleman at the next table complimented me on my "nice watch". If not for the business associates I was with, I probably would have struck up a conversation. He didn't have a watch on and I was wearing my YG YM2... what else would you wear when surrounded by yachts in Ft Lauderdale?

I was at a party with my fiancιe and her friends. I noticed a guy wearing an AP so I complimented him on it. He liked my YM. We had an interesting conversation since he liked similar things. It worked out well then. Just depends on the situation.

In response to the question posed on this thread, it really depends on the situation. Personally, I would not comment on a person's watch unless I know them, or we are at a party or some sort of social event as it can be awkward for the other party as they may or may not be watch fans.

Yes, I do and doing so has led to some very interesting conversations and a few awkward moments, too.

Not anymore. I've done it a few times thinking I might find another WIS and have some interesting conversation. Its only ever gone badly. I only ever got a confused look because maybe they don't care about the watch or it was not what I thought it was. Or they think some stranger is going to try and sell them something or rob them. Or they are somehow embarrassed or put off.

I now only make any kind of comment if its someone I have been in conversation with for a while. Never the opening comment.

I usually notice the watches when I'm out and about.
Just the other day I was on a tour with a Family from Florida.
Of the 10 in the group 4 were wearing a Rolex, with 2 DJs, a Milgauss and a Daytona in there.
I never mentioned anything to them about the watches, but I saw them all the same.
Very nice they were too.
