Opinions Needed on Watch Deal from the Forum

Hey guys. I just purchased a pre-owned Rolex from a dealer on the forums here in which the watch was stated as "mint condition". The seller only posted a few photos which were in a bit of dark lighting, but overall the watch looked to be in great condition.

We met in person for a face to face cash deal in which I inspected the watch and everything seemed okay just from a couple minutes of review. Today, just shy of 4 days later, looking in the daylight I noticed a bunch of micro chipping along the 41, 45-48 minute marker edge of the crystal. As I looked back at the seller's photos, you can make these scratches out in his photos too so it was not like I somehow cause the damage after purchase.

I'm a bit disappointed because I thought I was pretty good quality watch. Although there was some usage marks on it, overall it looked great. However, I had no intention of taking this in for servicing or crystal replacement and seeing this on the watch is making me want to request a refund. No refund notes were on the original sales post and nothing was stated about marks on the crystal. If I knew there was chipping I would not have bothered to make an offer on it.

I'd like to think that the seller was honest and had no clue since he's been selling on here for a while now, but regardless stating that a Rolex is in mint condition is false in this case with the crystal chipping.

Below is a shot I took the day after purchasing the watch. Looking back at the photo now I can definitely see the chips on there:

Opinions on if a refund is something I should be entitled to in this case?

It's a pre-owned watch. It will have dings in it. You inspected it in person. Seller is not at fault.

I agree. Enjoy the watch, not a big deal.

Yep.

If you inspected it yourself and didn't notice the chips, how bad can they be? There's a scratch on the crystal of my 14060 that was there when I bought it, and I've lived with it happily for almost 15 years now.

Disclosed in the pictures and inspected in person? No recourse nor should there be. Get it pressure tested and if all good live with it until it needs to be serviced. Not a big deal at all.

I did the same when I purchased my 14060, a face to face deal ample time to fully inspect on my part but I missed a couple of minute chips to the crystal and a very faint scratch. Not bothered at all when I realised though, it's a used watch doesn't impair on it's function which time wise is spot on. And I wear mine so will add my own scars, you could have bought a new one and knocked it the same day

I sympathize with you, but I don’t see how you can complain about the external condition of a watch you held in your hand and inspected before you bought it. If this had been an Internet deal you would have a case. But a face-to-face deal? Fuggetaboutit.

If the deal was face to face you had a chance to be sure. Next time don't forget a loupe. I never got a new watch without inspecting it carefully with a loupe and never had surprises. Cheers.

Really not noticeable. I hope you think that you paid a fair price. The piece looks good to me.

Hopefully you paid a great price, this is the tradeoff when buying a used piece. As you inspected can't be too major. Enjoy this great looking watch. Otherwise get in touch with the seller and see what they say.

nice watch. Whatever is wrong with the edge of the crystal, I cannot detect in the photograph. I would not complain at all, or if you do want to have a conversation with the seller, it should be respectful. JIMHO.

Lesson - always run your fingernail around the edge of the crystal. All the way around. If you would have done that, you would have noticed those nicks immediately. With that said, as others have stated it really is no big deal whatsoever - the watch will not self destruct. When you do send the watch in for service have the crystal replaced for $100 or so.

edges of sapphire crystals chip, it's just a fact.. There is simply no need to consider a crystal replacement for any thing outside a large chunk.

Good looking watch and one I am wearing right now, complete with small chips along the edge.. enjoy it..

Wouldn't worry about it, no ones going to notice the watch whilst you're wearing a shirt that bad.

Agree with all, just part of owning a nice watch that's actually used as opposed to babied.

Not sellers fault , 99% of crystals will have micro chips. I changed mine during service and about a month later I noticed a little chip. It's a watch dude

It won't hurt to politely ask the seller if he wants to chip in (pun intended) on a replacement crystal.

Agree, inspecting a watch while someone is waiting is not easy and you always forget to check something so as a goodwill gesture ask the seller if he might contribute to a solution, as I would not want my buyer to feel bad within reason.

I'd try...you are not happy to the point you wouldn't have bought it if you had known about this. It was described as mint , it was not. Ask for a refund. You never know. Sellers here get a lot of advocacy from us , so lets see if this goodwill works both ways?
Good luck.
