What do you think of the Sky Dweller?

I've been dead set on getting a BLRO as soon as it becomes available, but lately have been thinking a lot about the Sky Dweller. This is going to primarily be a travel watch, so yellow and rose gold are out of the question for me. I want either the GMT or Sky Dweller in white gold.

I already have a GMT Iic, so I know what it's like to "live with" the GMT. What's the Sky Dweller like as a go-everywhere, do-everything, travel watch for those who own one?

For those who don't, what are your thoughts on the design, the unique (for Rolex) complications, etc?

Thanks!

I really like it in WG. I don't own one, but if I were looking for a gold watch with gmt and date function, this would be very high on my list. Go try one on

Since you already have a GMT, I would go and really look at the Sky Dweller. In person I think they are pretty attractive, and it is a totally different look for you!

Thanks! I should have clarified that this new watch will replace the SS GMT.

As much as I try, I just don't love the SD. Get a PP 5164...best GMT I own by a mile.

I've tried to like Patek; I really have. I can't fall in love with their sport line, and won't spend for their big complications. Not sure I would wear a rubber strap with a suit, either... Patek or not.

I would ask, what's your usual attire for the watch in question. The blro is sporty ym dressy IMO

For business - suit, shirt, no tie.
For pleasure travel - anything from jeans to shorts to slacks. Rarely wear a suit or sport coat on leisure travel.

I got to try a few on and play with the complication. While the complication is impressive, and the watch has great heft, it just did not sing to me. The face feels too busy and the style seemed to be trying to get attention. The Rolex equivolent of "Hey!!! Look at me!!!"

The BLRO is just beautiful. You know what it is...WIS know what it is...But on the street, no one else needs to know what it is. And dual-time-zoning on the GMT movement is very, very easy. Plus, you get the added bonus of a solar compass!

I love the SkyDweller, especially in WG. It is a very cool movement and the design is very unique.

As far as the BLRO is concerned, I much prefer the WG Sub 116619, so if I was choosing between the BLRO and the SKD, it would be a no-brainer.

Thanks, Charles. I already have the 116619.

The pieces I'm trying to land on as a "final" (yeah, right) rotation are:

WG DD w/meteorite - own
WG Sub 116619 - own
WG GMT / SkyD - to acquire
Platona or YG Daytona - may acquire... haven't decided

I picked up WG bracelet "polar" sky-d in mid-August and I've been wearing it regularly since then. My typical activities include ~ 40 min.s of walk everyday, desk job, classroom teaching etc. and I wear it all the time. It has been running very well ... gains ~ 1-2 sec/day, date/month changes ~ 40 sec after midnight (I have posted some photos and videos earlier).

I haven't used it as a travel watch yet, since I haven't left my home town since I purchased it. But I do plan to use it as a travel watch during Christmas holidays and other travels.

You can also consider the WG sky-d (black dial) on strap. My AD apparently has one now and I am planning to check it out soon. I actually wanted something on bracelet so that I can wear it in rain etc. without worrying about the leather strap. Also I wanted a watch for regular everyday wear and something that would draw less attention than YG or RG ... so I went for WG.

If you have any specific question I'll be happy to answer,

Don't like them at all...Sorry. Get the GMT!

PS. If you do buy you better get a really strong price as they have the worst resale numbers of any Rolex I have ever seen and trust me I know the real market for them and it isn't good.

I would think that if you're buying it to keep then the resale value is not of great concern. Just make sure that the Skydweller is what you REALLY want.

Sure I have noticed nobody ever changes their minds on watches here and flips.

I too have noticed this Ken. The preowned and new price has come down tremendously since release (double digit points i believe). Not sure where it will settle but I wouldn't mind it if I can pick up a rose gold on strap at 25k which i think will be possible one day.

I picked up mine, at a great price, and am very happy I did. I truly love it.

Will eventually add one of the rose pieces.

There's definitely a more limited resale market. And, I can't ever remember a Rolex model being more polarizing. People seem to really like it or really hate it.

Way too big and too hard to read clearly, but the complications are nice.

The WG would be my choice of SkyD and that or the BLRO would be my choice for a WG Rolex too. I would just wait and see exactly how the red and blue are on the BLRO, if they turn out to be a bit too pink and purple than blue and red then I would go SkyD, but if they nail the colours then it has to be the BLRO.

Aesthetics aside, the complications are very cool. I'm not perfect on my vintage Rolex knowledge, but this may be the most complicated movement they've ever made. That has to count for something. :-)

I've heard more than once at a perpetual calendar may be in the works so I would bear that in mind if the AC complication is really attracting you to the SkyD.

The AC complication is a big part of the attraction... That plus the GMT function and precious metal.
