Finally! my first Rolex: 16750

It's been a really long time, but I finally located one semi-locally.

I had found the GMT by sifting through a google search. Wouldn't you know it, on the 10th page...a matte dial GMT from a high end watch store in Carmel. I was so excited that I tried to reach them all weekend. Luckily, I didn't give up and got ahold of one of their concierge who put me through to the owner, an employee of the store. It was still available! I had to pinch myself.

I had to drive 90 minutes down to see it for myself. Before I could do that, I had asked the resident vintage GMT expert, Mike, for some assistance. He pointed me to a number of things to look for including corrosion on the hands. (Thanks, Mike!)

It was a 1980 6.65 mil serial GMT with original hands and dial. No blemishes too.

The watch came with two bands, an older stretched 9135 w/280 ends and the one you see, a 78790 for the Exp I. Oh the nice guy gave me the original faded bezel which is in a light blue/ light red color without any marks!

The pics aren't to great, but it's what I can do with my work's point and shoot. You can see the antique white markers match the hands. The minute and hour hands show a bit of corrosion, but the most is the seconds hand. I hope an RSC won't force me to swap with newer luminova hands.

Now I have to take it to SF RSC for check through. This one is gonna be passed down to my next generation.. after I enjoy for the next 50 years!

I had a 16750 and it was a great looking watch for me.
I gave it to my brother about 5 years ago, and he loves it
Here is my memory of mine when I had it:

P.S. When getting it serviced never allow the hands or the dial to be replaced.

Congratulations on a fine acquisition!!

Enjoy that watch in the very best of health.

I must say, your 16750 looks a lot like my 1675 because yours still has the matte dial. It must be a really early example of the 16750, it looks like its in great condition too!

The 16750 was my first Rolex too! I really wish I hadn't sold it - it was a BIG mistake. I now have a 16710, so I feel better, but there was something really special about the 16750. Mine had been serviced and the dial and hands were changed, but it didn't bother me. It was like a BRAND NEW watch!

Congratulations. For those discussing this yesterday, r111's watch would be what was worn on Magnum, PI.

Thanks for all the praises. I'll try and get some pics of the watch and faded bezel using a dslr.

The guy had some history with the watch and felt sad parting with it. He thought it over and realized he could get something nice by selling the watch. To be honest it was my first time holding a 16750.

Is it possible to get an RSC to keep the corroded hands, but still perform a standard service? If so, how much damage on the hands has been acceptable?
