AD Lying or just wrong?
Ok, I am the first to admit I am not the most knowledgeable watch aficionado, however, it is a passion so I try to absorb as much as I can, and my knowledge base is probably slightly higher than your average walk in customer. Today I walk into a Rolex AD here in South Florida to browse a few minutes while my wife is running a couple errands in a store next door. The salesman tries to get me to try on the "new" Yachtmaster, so ask him which new model he means, he tells me the blue dial one, and I ask him what he thinks of the one just shown at Basel. He then proceeds to "inform" me of all the details, except he was way off on the case size (said 44 mm) and price (said $38k, US). I let the "rubber" strap comment slide (elastomer, but I digress) but felt I had to correct him on the price and case size. He disagreed with my information when I asked him if he was sure about the price, and added it will be very rare and hard to get. I was so turned off I couldn't hang out any more and left, and I won't be returning. My question is, do you guys call someone out when they are either so irresponsible with data or do you just chalk it up to another poorly informed, manipulative salesman and leave? I find it offensive that an AD would be so irresponsible with basic data.

There are so many options for places to purchase these days, you should not let one ignorant sales person frustrate you. I typically go to try on watches on get them in hand, never to receive the opinions of the sales people, and never to expect an education. |

This happens all the time. Cars sales is no different.
You would hope that the salesperson has the same level of passion and interest we all do for watches but the bottom line is sometimes they just don't. I myself would point out that they are incorrect but not in a condescending manner of course. I will say that if you are working in commission like many jewelry people are... They better know more about the product than the average joe. |

What I will say is that I make sure I know my product inside out so if I do meet someone that has nothing better to do with their life that study one particular car I can at least hold my own or I concede and I will learn from them. Bottom line is if they know that much about something why have they not bought? If they can't answer that then they are not buying. |

As far as knowing tons of information about something they haven’t purchased… I am a BMW enthusiast and probably know a lot more than I should about the new M4 or M5 because I have a passion for it. Unfortunately I’m not in the position to run out and buy a 130k M5 after I get off of work today. This doesn’t mean I should stop reading about BMWs. |

I'm tired, no offence taken mate. Point is sales staff have a hard time against people that have been reading the Internet for a month before turning up. If they know more than you the question is why have you not bought a car? Question is, what do I have to do to sell you a car? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I was thinking with the styling of the new everose ym1 and the "rubber" band maybe he confused it with an hublot or AP (it was a joke)

Great advice guys!! Helps me keep things in perspective and reminds me this a fun hobby. Chuckling to myself is what I will do next time (along with asking for some water or expresso)!! Exactly right that I am not really asking for an education or lecture, just the opportunity to see the pieces in the flesh. Got to learn to keep my expectations in check. Thanks again.

I typically just nod my head sarcastically and get away as soon as possible. Happens constantly at car dealers. It amazes me how so many people don't know the product they sell

I need my salespeople to do two things right: 1) get me a water while I try on watches and 2) get my name and address right when shipping me a watch. Anything more is asking for too much.

With all the resources at our fingertips today, we really don't have to rely on sales staff to do much more than give us what we need to look at and handle the transaction if there is one. I make a little game of asking sales staff questions, just to see if they know anything and sometimes it's worth a chuckle.

My local jeweler (not AD) offers complimentary adult beverages. Albeit not a great selection (Budweiser and Labatt), I'm not one to turn down a free beer while browsing his selection of pre-owned Rolexes |

I don't know about anyone else but to me that sounds like the best damn dealer this side of the Mississippi. I find that generally any relationship with a dealer who is a proper watch enthusiast and all around great human being is worth being loyal to if you find one. OP have you tried Kirk Jewelers in Downtown Miami? worth a visit if anything. Beautiful store, and the guy has some Pateks there that he can show you just for kicks. Most importantly, he knows what he's doing.

My wife and I were in and bought her a new DateJust 116200 last fall. Later that night in the hotel room we noticed the saleswoman had written my wife's name down in correctly....Kathy instead of Kelly...excellent!! This after my wife had wrote down here name and address for the saleswoman before we left for 30 minutes while they sized it. She had 1/2 hour to fill in the warranty card while we were gone....no other customers in the store...and she still got it wrong. But she's already gone and replaced by someone else...although prettier...probably not much better.

Agreed, however, I like a glass of champagne while contemplating my purchase.

I think he's more clueless than deceitful. Unfortunately, he is a salesman, not a WIS.
