Rolex and Perfection
Everyone, do you think your Rolex brings out your OCD tendencies and drives your relentless pursuit of perfection? I'm a perfectionist by nature but I have to have everything exceedingly perfect on my watches. If I see something that doesn't line up, I must get it fixed right away. What makes it worse is that I cannot fix it myself and have to stare at it continuously until it's repaired. I've spent considerable time trying to convince myself that something was correct when in fact I knew it wasn't.
For all the watchmakers out there, do your Rolex clients drive you crazy? Or can you appreciate their desire to have things just right? This reminds me of the old "can't see the forest for the trees" expression. I feel like we sometimes take for granted all the wonderous activity that happens at the heart of our watches and instead focus only on the small superficial details of the hands, dial, bezel, case and bracelet. However, it's my personal belief that ultimate and terminal perfection in the timepiece realm is completely possible because everything is mathematical and symmetrical, and therefore capable of being aligned perfectly. I want to thank all the watchmakers for their patience and for continuing to develop their fine art. |

To be honest when I'm buying, I want it to be as perfect as possible, after that I simply take sensible precautions just because it cost me a kidney so to speak.

Same, just has to be for me. One of my obsessions is not just the watch but the packaging i.e tags and all stuff there in perfect order.

I appreciate everyone's good natured response! I think we as Rolex owners sometimes get perceived as picky and hard to please. Really, we're very easy to please and the solution is always clear.

Well considering the business and the cost of these luxury items who in their right mind would want less than perfect?

I cannot disagree with you. The objective is very clear - if something is in need of alignment, then align it. If something needs to be polished, then polish it. It's not like we're asking for some never before seen result. If it's possible, then I want it!

Thanks JJ! I was trying to take some last night but it was much more difficult than I thought it would be. Too much reflection, not enough lighting and certainly not the crisp detail of all the other postings I've seen on here.

Don't you have some more exciting things to do at night rather than taking some silly pictures?

When I bought my LV, I bought it without looking at the watch. The AD says he had one and I took my American Express and bought it. Rolex is a sinonimus of perfection so I thought all Rolexes come immaculate. My surprise was to see the dial all mess up after I took some time to admire its beauty. When I see the problem, I though "This cannot be". All kind of thought crossed my mind from a fake to a serious lack of care. It took 2 months for Rolex to repair the mistake, but my thoughts right now are that if they make such a mistake on my watch, something else might be no right. I am giving Rolex a second chance. My LV will arrive to Mexico July 8. I will post my experience with the Rolex Service Center. Right now I am disappointed since they should gave priority to my watch.

I'm somewhat of a perfectionist but I have to accept my watches the way they are. I buy from grey market or preowned. I just can't afford new from an AD...LOL!

Buying from a non-AD does NOT mean that you have to accept the watches in the condition that they come to you. I've found that most of the more reputable non-ADs have independent watchmakers on-site who can fix anything you desire.

I don't study my watches too closely - it's easy to find flaws if one looks hard enough. I don't expect perfection from the brand. Anything higher up would be a different story though.

Perfection is elusive and I have to admit I have never broken out the loupe on my Rolex but when I pay this amount for a SS watch I do want it to be as close as reasonably possible. I intend to be the one to impart the imperfections.

Okay, first and foremost, for the real OCD guys, it can't possibly be OCD - it has to be CDO!
I agree with Mike. When I buy them, they have to be in perfect order - after all, I'm not forking out my money to an AD for something that isn't spot-on. Once I've got it, though, I accept that some scratches and dings come with the territory of wearing a watch on a daily basis. Cameron, if you're trying to get good shots of your watches this thread may provide a few good pointers: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?p=512886

I am very much a perfectionist, too. I have been know to spend a full HOUR inspection a Rolex before buying it!
As already stated by others, I don't want to spend my hard earned money on a watch with QC issues.
