Yacht-master II for AP Royal Oak Diver?
So I know I've been all over the radar lately in regards to hunting down the next piece.
I've been strongly considering Rolex Precious Metal, which most likely means flipping my YMII and possibly my LVC too (if i replace them with a PM Sub). Anyway, here's the thought process. Before I got my YMII I strongly considered and debate the DSSD as well as the AP Diver. I've definitely had my fears about taking the leap into AP. It's kind of like I've been vacationing in the same place for 20 years, and now I'm considering trying some place new. But the original place just feels like home. OK, blah blah, you get it. So here's where I'm at. I've been infatuated with the AP Diver for longer than the DSSD and the YMII. I love the look, the strap versatility, the feel and of course contextual history of the Audemars Piguet. If i was to seriously consider leaving my SS days behind me for PM, part of me feels like I need to knock the AP Diver off my horological bucket list. Does picking up the AP Diver before transitioning to PM make sense? There is always the option of just keeping what I have, while avoiding the mid winter desire for a new piece. I do realize enjoying my current collection may be the best and most affordable move. So what do you guys think about the two watches and my situation? Oh current rotation is more or less three watches... Yacht-Master II 116680 LVC Submariner - 116610LV Tudor Black Bay Black Thanks! ![]() My YMII ![]() AP Diver at AD ![]() |

I would. AP finishing is on a different level, one that you're appreciate once you have spent more time with it. Enjoy!

I'm not a fan of the YMII, so take this with a grain of salt: Get the AP. Check the box. Then you'll never have to wonder about it again. Heck, you might really love it and decide your next piece is a PM AP...

Chad, I have the YMII like yourself, I also have the AP diver along with the DSSD. I have recently become enamored with a PM rolex and decided that I have to let one watch go. I decided on the AP diver. One reason, as keeping a sporty watch in the stable with black, I chose to keep the DSSD. I simply like the look of it more, and for the price of an AP diver, I find it redundant to keep that one as I can still get most of my money back. It really is a beautiful piece but changing strap and bracelet is a challenge. Don't get rid of the YMII, it's colors are simply not replaced by the AP. Have fun deciding.

Tough call, though I would lean towards the AP.

I like the AP Diver, and am considering adding one. But that photo you've posted of the DSSD on your wrist looks best to me!

For the ceramic Diver, yes. Otherwise, for me, personally, YMII feels more "special" than the SS Diver.

I agree with Cru here ... One of the ROO Chronos would be a different story, but out of these two, I prefer the YM II.

To my untrained eye, both watches wear splendidly on your wrist, can't help you with the decision.

I can speak from recent experience. Had the BLNR which I flipped for a BNIB AP Diver. The AP lasted 6 weeks. Fine craftsmanship, yes. High end movement, yes. Cool piece, yes. But....
The AP negatives were 1. Ultra scratch magnet on an unforgiving bezel. 2. Kept lousy time. 3. Service costs freaked me out. 4. The straps are very expensive and very difficult to change. I could not possibly change the strap myself. 5. Tough daily wearer. Went with the YMII SS. After many, many Rolex I have finally found one that I will never part with. It's so different, so unique, seldom seen, tremendous wrist presence, gorgeous ceramic blue bezel, great size and just so weird, I love it. I would not part with the YMII if I were you. AP are awesome watches but a lot more "fragile" in my mind than Rolex. Fragile may not be the best descriptive word but I'm sure you get what I mean. Good luck. ![]() Edited to add... the AP Diver totally useless inner bezel adjuster (with its cheap rubber casing) at 10 o'clock just always looked out of place to me. On my AP also, the inner bezel did not align at 12:00. Not even close. That bothered me on a watch at that price point. |

I like the YM II more. Love AP. I personally don't like the divers though.

AP hands down-but the real question is which one speaks to you? Any inclination between having both on the wrist?

I always heard the AP's maintenance fees were ridiculous. I consider it the Audi of watches.
One guy on youtube sent his in, the fees to fix it was something like $3500. Crazy. But hey, if you got the funds to pay for maintaining something that sounds so unreliable........... |
