Im wondering how rolex can compete on professional tool watches without digi. I mean when I see all the functions of the Omega skywalker watch Im asking myself how it is possible for Rolex to stay like this.

Sure why not; it depends on what markets they want into.

No. I think the number of people that actually NEED a watch like that is tiny, and the number of people who WANT one like that is not so much larger.

Rolex is doing very well selling jewelry that can tell time. I doubt a watch like that would appeal to the targeted demographic.

Yes but now, no adventuror, no explorator, no aviator etc... will wear a Rolex anymore due to the lack of functions. And to buy a watch at that price you need to dream. An ambassador in his castle eating petits four wearing a Rolex does not make me dream

Well, sell yours and stop buying them.

Plenty of other people understand Rolex and don't expect a Rolex to be the multitasking unit that some watches try to be.

It would be a shame, but it will probably come down to where they view the future trends of the market place. The number of individuals who love to pair technology in their daily lifes may create a market that Rolex wishes to participate in, who knows only time will tell.

I have a Breitling Emergency that does all that stuff. I would prefer my Rolex pieces to remain classic. My digi slot is filled already and I guarantee there is no room for two in my collection lol.

I think a Rolex is mostly thought of as just a piece of luxurious jewelry now. Even though some people still tout tool/sports etc...

I like my Breitling Emergency, but ever since the battery died on me, I travel with auto back up (Rolex). Otherwise for daily use, always mechanical watch.

I can't see Rolex getting into that space/aviator digital watch market. Too non-traditional.

Seiko's Spring Drive movement is an interesting hybrid of mechanical and quartz and has better accuracy than Rolex's +/- 2 sec per day. Is it mechanical? Is it Quartz? Kind of both, but even so I don't see Rolex going here either.

It combines the worst of both worlds. Expensive frequent service? Check. Electronic parts that have to be replaced? Check. No thanks.

I think that Rolex is probably happy that many people believe they are buying a tool watch from them, when in fact it bears greater resemblance to jewelry. Just because it is essentially the same as what it was 50 years ago (and maybe doesn't have a polished bracelet) doesn't mean it is somehow a tool watch. For example, a modern production BMW performs better than a F1 car from the 1960s, but nobody would think that a 1960 F1 car is fit for purpose in today's F1 world. Those adventurers, explorers, extreme sportspeople who today need real tool watches are of little interest to Rolex anymore, other than to exploit a marketing opportunity. Sure, the watches have heritage value, and, speaking for myself, I like the feel of it and what it means to me, but if I even go for a run, I need something more technically superior on my wrist (i.e., a tool which is fit for the job at hand). Rolex watches, as with most "expensive" watches, are jewelry - fine ones at that - but jewelry none the less. They are tougher than your average Patek I would say, and one can have a high degree of confidence in their reliability and robustness, but if I were heading on a solo trip to Everest tomorrow, I'd think long and hard about my equipment of choice, and would be unlikely to choose Rolex.
