When you obtain your grail, do you designate another
So at the ripe old age of 47 I finally got my grail this past week. I have wanted a white face Daytona since I can remember.
I wanted to ask this question. Once you obtained your grail, did you create another grail and does it just keep going until you die Need to know if I should start thinking about that, the new grail. And the proverbial bad cell phone pic, Happy Holidays. IMG_3822.jpg |

Great piece! I call them long term grails and short term grails. My short term is a daydate 40. Long term grail will be after I buy the day date

I'm in the camp of there are a few grails. There are some that when you get, have a place in the collection forever, and others...once you've owned, you sometimes desire something else. No wrong answer to this one...

Well I always thought a grail was something "out of reach" so to speak.

I don't think there are any rules for collecting here.
We all have our own ideas as to what a grail watch is and what to do if or when it is obtained. I've never really given much thought to such a thing, but if I had to choose something to serve as my grail watch, I think it would probably be a Patek Calatrava. I know I'll never own one, but at the same time it is a watch that I hold in high regard and would like to have. I kind of agree with the idea that a true grail anything should be for all practical purposes unattainable or very nearly so. Using that as a model, a grail would not just be something that you've wanted for a long time. It is something that takes some kind of miracle to obtain.

My grail has been a 5130 for ever. I could buy it anytime now however that is one that I will never own. What I do is try it on every few months to admire it.

For me the grail watch is a moving target. As I acquire a watch that has grail status many times it is the hunt, deal and arrival of a new piece. When I actually get the watch many times I will move along to something else in a rather quick time frame. Sometimes I have bought the same watch 2 or three times until I get it out of my system or add it to the collection for the long term. For me it is all fun and as long as I buy right and sell right it is not too bad financially. I do enjoy my watches.

I am not into the concept of a grail, as it doesn't mean much to me.
Having said that, I do view my watch as a companion that will stay with me for a long time. My intention while buying is to choose one that I can keep for all my live. It has happened though that I "traded up" after several years, due to the fact that over time, it became clearer what I liked and what not. Visual perception develops over the years, just like one develops one's ears by playing a musical instrument, increasing the ability to discern differences in tone qualities between different models/makes. |

My grail is just that, a grail.
Something i'm fairly confident i'll never be able to afford but if by some miracle I can years down the road then that will be me done as to me, that is top of the tree! |

I have a core grail collection now, and a few other watches that are not def keepers. One day I just might sell the collection for a Holy Grail.

ive given up on grails.... i get to obsessed with wanting something and dont stop till i get it.... once ive got it the thrill is gone, ive realised its safer for my bank account not to have grails and try to start enjoying the ones i have a bit more.... ive realised watch collecting is not a sport and i have to stop competing with myself

Yeah I thought a grail is that piece that you'll likely never acquire or your end game. I dunno if the latter is possible with this hobby. It may be that you are a watch addict like most of us or it's the thrill of the chase for you and you are marking your target. Or both.

Nice Daytona
I used to love the thrill of the chase for specific pieces, and always believed the target was an ever moving goalpost.
Then I found my perfect four, and feel like I've settled in. I see other pieces now and they look nice, but I just don't feel the temptation or want of the chase anymore. |

Yep. Each time I take one down I designate the next mark.

My grail was the Day-Date, not because it was the absolute best watch on the planet, but because I believe it is the best looking watch on the planet. I have other watches that are better finished (technically) or more advanced, but none compare as far as beauty or feel than the YG Day-Date.

i got my Grail, but its only a matter of time. 30 years of watch passion does not just die when you get that unreachable one in your hands.
